Sharkunami Gone Barmy!

When a tsunami traps shoppers inside a coastal Australian supermarket, their survival prospects are reduced even further when Great White Sharks find their way into the area.

It’s as nutty as it sounds, a bonkers but wonderfully genius premise is played out with “B” movie heart and a smile on its face. Standard rules apply, there’s a myriad of characters who are in need of redemption or reconciliations, and of course it’s a time for heroes and villains to thrust themselves forward. Action and suspense is never far away, and neither is blood! There’s even some humour to be found, especially with a bickering couple of teenage lovers.

Some of the CGI is poor and as is the norm with this type of film, there’s daft scenes that ask you to just roll with it. If you can do that then there’s a good time to be had here. 6/10

The Aussies never disappoint.

Remarkably watchable
Shark movies, how many good ones are out there? Well, after the obvious the list is pretty baron. However, Bait is remarkably watchable. I was quite surprised to find myself glued to the screen after over half an hour of character show and tell and only the opening shark scene to reel us in. The CGI and casting are the only two factors that plead with me to turn the movie off. For a thirty-mil budget the shark animations were truly inadequate, yet Bait managed to survive considering. Which is more than can be said for most civilians who aren’t trapped in a supermarket given the state of that Australian coastline. Matthew Lessall and Ben Parkinson (Casting) need a job chat, some sideline characters offer absolutely, indescribably the worst performances I have ever seen. Listening to the psychotic Aussie robber, frantic store manager and squabbling couple in their car really made me shudder with anger. More time establishing deeper character backgrounds instead would have pleased, although they hold up pretty well for a shark flick.

Despite some teeth grinding actors and reminders of Bruce from Finding Nemo, Bait is visually very pleasing and makes for a worthy shark movie.

Great White Sharks from Down Under
A year after losing his friend to a shark attack, “Josh” (Xavier Samuel) calls off his engagement to his friend’s sister and decides to live alone in Australia for awhile. Meanwhile his ex-fiancé, “Tina” (Shari Vinson) manages to get on with her life and eventually gets another boyfriend. Then a year after the shark attack she comes back to Australia with her new boyfriend and while she is in the same shopping mall as Josh a huge tsunami puts most of it underwater. Even worse, two very large great white sharks with voracious appetites are also trapped in the same shopping mall with the few survivors who are left. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie and risk spoiling it for those who haven’t seen it I will just say that this turned out to be a pretty good “shark movie” for the most part. Admittedly, the special effects were somewhat hit-or-miss and the ending was a bit unrealistic but other than that it was quite enjoyable. The acting was satisfactory and the suspense kept me interested from start to finish. Likewise, having several pretty actresses like Alice Parkinson (as “Naomi”), Phoebe Tonkin (“Jaimie”), Cariba Heine (“Heather”) and the aforementioned Shari Vinson certainly didn’t hurt either. In any case, while all too many movies of this type border on the ridiculous this particular film seems to be a rare exception to the rule and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.
