With his father gone and his mother loopy and clueless, he’s been expelled from every private school for his victimless crimes. Now he’s in a public school getting punched out daily by the school thug. He ever longs to be popular – the go-to guy – and the true crux of his troubles is that he invariably finds the means to this end, whatever that might be. At Western Summit High, he makes peace with his tormentor by going into business with him – listening to kids’ problems and selling them prescription drugs. Charlie’s a hit, but attraction to Susan (daughter of the school’s laissez-faire principal), new security cameras on campus, a student’s overdose, and Charlie’s open world view all converge to get him in serious trouble. Can this self-made physician possibly heal himself and just be a kid?.
Plot: Awkward teenager Charlie Bartlett has trouble fitting in at a new high school. Charlie needs some friends fast, and decides that the best way to find them is to appoint himself the resident psychiatrist. He becomes one of the most popular guys in school by doling out advice and, occasionally, medication, to the student body.

EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING
This is one of the most near-perfect movies that I have watched in a very long time. I was completely enthralled with the storyline, the actors, and the movie itself. The movie had it all, comedy, drama, and guidance on the angsts of growing up and being a teen. I could not have asked for a more complete movie. Very good, very, very good.

Underrated Teen Comedy.
Charlie Bartlett (2007): Dir: Jon Poll / Cast: Anton Yelchin, Kat Dennings, Robert Downey Jr., Hope Davis, Tyler Hilton: Clever teen comedy about Charlie Bartlett who doesn’t fit in at school. He tends to achieve trouble and finds a method of acceptance when he prescribes medication to those seeking answers to their troubled existence. Despite formula structure Jon Poll directs a film that addresses real issues in teenagers particularly difficulties in acceptance. This is Poll’s only directing credit in some time and he shows great promise and potential particularly in creating broad teen personalities. Anton Yelchin plays Charlie as an adult in a teenager’s body. He comes from a wealthy family yet becomes a funnel for those around him until he faces dire consequences. Robert Downey Jr. plays the principal who cannot relate to his daughter, and finds confrontation in Bartlett. Kat Dennings plays the principal’s rebellious daughter who smokes but finds romance with Bartlett as well as an extra voice in her protest home life. Hope Davis steals scenes as Charlie’s naïve mother in what would be standard material except for her comic input. Tyler Hilton plays the school bully who forms an alliance with Bartlett when a need is met. As with Election this film draws on heavy themes that its target audience may relate. The challenge of acceptance while growing up earn this film applause. Score: 9 / 10
