Reviews:

This time it’s the Frankenstein story that gets the Tim Burton treatment delivering us an hybrid of “Edward Scissorhands” (1990) and Karloff’s “Frankenstein” (1935) with a little pooch throw in for good measure. It’s the eponymous mutt that gets hit by car whilst fetching a baseball hit, surprisingly, out of the park by his young master “Victor”. Distraught, the scientifically minded youngster concocts a cunning plan to use the attic windows, some toy seahorses and loads and loads of lightning to bring “Sparky” back from the dead. What now ensues is quite a fun series of escapades as the young man resurrects his friend and tries to keep it a secret from his schoolmates ahead of a looming science fair that causes his friends to try to mimic his skills and create monstrous mayhem en route. The monochrome stop-motion animation (especially their eyes!) and typically fun Danny Elfman score make for an effective comedy-horror and it is hard not to engage with the reincarnated patchwork puppy. Their rather menacing science teacher “Rzykruski” reminded me of Christopher Lee, too. It’s a quickly paced and engaging tale with a gentle morality to it – love, loyalty, friendship all feature strongly in a narrative that goes some way to illustrate how, illogically sometimes, people can become attached to their pets. Good fun, this film.

Good stuff, unmistakably Tim Burton.

Frankenweenie is a solid stop-motion horror film from Disney. Interesting plot, coupled with a suitable cast and untypical animation. It’s also in black-and-white, which doesn’t hamper things at all – I, in a weird sort of way, kinda forgot it was b/w for vast portions.

Charlie Tahan voices the lead character, Victor Frankenstein. You also have well-known names in Winona Ryder (Elsa), Martin Short (Edward) and Catherine O’Hara (Susan). I also liked Martin Landau as Rzykruski. There’s decent humour amongst those characters, too.

Worth a watch, for sure.

They’ve gotta learn sooner or later…
If anywhere there was a braver ending needed, it’s here. Kids could have learned that life is but fleeting, we all suffer heartbreak sooner or later, say goodbye to the ones we love… This is an important lesson indeed. But, no. In the interest of a few mums and dads having to tolerate some waterworks on the way home from the cinema, Burton decides to go for what is essentially a cop out. Rather cowardly, if you ask me.

The whole film has the feel of an old B movie (but is set in the present day) as it is shot entirely in black and white and contains more than one horror reference. Spookiness pervades the atmosphere, as Danny Elfman’s Gothic score meanders in the background like a funeral march. Poor Victor loses his dog, and his mourning and subsequent resurrection of his pet carries real emotion weight.

This doesn’t last though, as the plot stretches to Victor’s classmates experimenting on other deceased creatures, turning them into freaks of nature that invade the town. This is an arresting spectacle, but a betrayal of what transpired before… turning the movie from a personal tale about a boy and his half-dead canine, into an OTT monster movie. It feels like a different film, and not one that matched up to the poignant first half.

Not for one minute would I suggest I could tell Mr Burton how to do his job. But I think less action, and more storytelling would have improved the final reel no end… As well as a more courageous conclusion. Oh well, everyone’s a critic (Most don’t enunciate their thoughts as well as I do, though)… 😉 6/10

No humans – stop motion or otherwise – were harmed in the making of this film
This is really Tim Burton at his best, and you’d probably enjoy it even if you came to it without any background in Burton’s work or Universal classic horror. But it helps if you know about both. After all, who isn’t moved by a boy and dog’s pure immovable unconditional love for one another? When this love is interrupted by death, as it is in the case of young Victor Frankenstein and his dog Sparky, young Victor takes what he has learned about science to bring Sparky back to life, albeit with a bunch of stitches and a couple of bolts in his neck. When Sparky escapes the attic where he is kept while Victor is at school all day, that is when the trouble starts.

You see elements of “Edward Scissorhands” including the clueless although well meaning parents with the 60s decor, characters inspired by Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff, and you just really need to have seen Bride of Frankenstein – and might I add Jurassic Park? – to get a few of the jokes. The score is trademark eerie Burton, and the scenes in the pet cemetery are spooky or heart rending, depending on the situation.

Most poignant scene? Reanimated Sparky – still the friendly little dog he was in life – is discovered alive by people who know he died and they shriek in terror. The bewildered little dog makes for the safety of the Pet Cemetery and curls up next to his headstone.

This one made me shed a tear at a few points as well as laugh out loud at other times. I’d highly recommend this one.
