A sensitive portrayal of a modern woman during these modern times
After seeing Lelio’s original Chilean version, I was curious about this remake and always enjoy Julianne Moore’s performances.
I understand people’s frustrations and dislike of her flawed character, but what I did love was her honesty in her faults and her portrayal of a woman seeking modern love in Los Angeles. Moore gives a quiet, sympathetic and disarming performance as Gloria, a woman who is trying to navigate her own life and seek what she needs with bravado, vulnerability, and a sense of adventure. Her relationship with Arnold was doomed from the start, yet she found a way to make it through on her terms. Moore could have been mawkish and melodramatic, yet her choices as an actress to show the layers of this character through her quiet actions and her skillful delivery were never overcooked or overplayed.
What I enjoyed the most was the final scene(s). The joy, pain and liberation Gloria felt throughout the film was brilliantly reflected through Moore. As if the whole motifs of the film were being replayed in 10-15 minutes.
I highly recommend this film for anyone looking for a nuanced and interesting character study on what it means to be a certain age navigating the tricky waters of life.

I’m literally sitting in the movie right now writing this review. Yes, it is so boring that I had to say it before it was even over. Don’t worry, I’m not bothering anyone around me. There are only 3 other people here and 1 of them is checking Facebook.
Super slow… super pointless… good soundtrack. There you go, whole movie.
