Nice little movie with a message
Ok, it was a little cheesy, as someone said, but I liked it. I liked the actors, the scenery, the animals, and the message about elephant conservation. People love to pick apart movies but you can just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. It was never meant to be an award winner. It’s just a pleasant film to watch at Christmas or anytime.

Love story is secondary to the elephants
Kristin Davis plays Kate-a wealthy upper class New York wife and mother who gave up her career as a vet years ago to support her husband and be a full-time mother. The film opens with Kate’s son-played by Luke Owen Lowe (Rob Lowe’s son IRL) leaving for college. Once he is gone she tells her husband that she has booked them a second honeymoon trip to Africa. He responds by letting her know that he’s not in love with her anymore and is leaving. Although she is not really in love with him any longer either this still comes as a complete surprise to her. She decides to go on the trip to Africa anyway.

Once there we are introduced to Derek (played by Rob Lowe) who enters the picture right away. Kate is at dinner alone reading guide books when Derek comes into the restaurant. He chats her up but of course they do the obligatory to every romance story butting of heads thing and she walks off in a huff.

The next day when she arrives for her African safari she finds out that Derek is the pilot. On their way to the Safari he tells her he has to make a stop. They touch down and he tells her to stay in the plane and that he’ll be back shortly. She of course does not listen and gets out and follows him where they come upon an orphaned baby elephant whose mother is lying dead next to it having just been killed by poachers. They work together to get the baby subdued while Derek calls for help to get the baby back to the sanctuary where he also helps out and lives. Instead of getting back in the plane with Derek Kate decides she’s going to travel with the baby back to the sanctuary. When she gets there she instantly falls in love with the place, the people and the elephants and decides she’s going to stay. They find out that she used to be a vet and employ her help with the elephants.

Eventually it’s time for her to go back but of course once she’s back in NY she misses Derek, the elephants, Africa and the people so much that she decides to sell her apartment and move there permanently. She does so with the blessing of her son and her ex-husband. She and Derek get married and the very end shows them releasing one of the orphaned baby elephants back into the wild after it has been rehabilitated.

Yes this is cheesy and trite and well worn material. No Rob Lowe and Kristin Davis do not have any chemistry. Yes there are better Christmas films out there however I do give the writer and director credit for helping to shed light on a real problem that the elephant population is facing. The ending was a real heart stabber especially if you’re a mother as you know the absolute pain of letting your children go…seeing the elephant being released back into the wild really choked me up because it made me think of my only child when he left for the service.

So while this is not a great film and there is a lot to critique I’m going to choose to let the focus be on the elephants because HEY! It got me to donate! As soon as I finished the movie I went online and found a reputable organization to donate to. I do think this is a worthwhile cause and whether you believe in supporting elephants or not remember to keep the focus on what the holidays are all about and consider donating to an organization that helps those who are less fortunate than you.
