Original idea with conventional pitfalls.
I watched the Julia’s Eyes world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival a couple of days ago, and I have to say that although I was entertained, it did fall short of my expectations. Seeing how the film was produced by Guillermo del Toro, I was really hoping for a horror/thriller on par with Pans Labyrinth or The Orphanage.

Julia’s Eyes does have an original idea at its core and that’s what keeps you guessing and entertained through the duration of the film. Unfortunately the film does fall into some cliché horror jump scares and the plot does not completely come together. It feels as though the filmmaker started with a great idea but wasn’t fully able to pull it all together cohesively in the end. I want to keep this review spoiler free so I’m not going to get into any plot details, but suffice to say that the antagonist’s plot line does not come to a rewarding conclusion.

That said, I think there is a lot to like here, the acting is great, some wholly original ideas are explored and there is enough tense and truly scary scenes to keep most horror/thriller fans happy.

Julia’s Eyes is a film I enjoyed on the whole and I think people should seek out.

it starts well but then it becomes boring and overcomplicated
I will tell you when this movie started to suck for me: until minute 50. After that it becomes even boring and easy to guess what was going on. The beginning was cool, someone trying to find the truth about what happened, the movie kept us guessing and wondering what everything was about. The second part wanted to gives us more scares but is not very well made. The pace of this movie wasn’t well thought and it shows. The atmosphere wasn’t that suspenseful, even though there were one or two scenes that i found effective.

At a certain point i just wasn’t interested anymore about what was going on or the characters. the movie just shifted so quickly to something very different that almost wanted to become another film. It seemed almost like we’re watching two unfinished scripts in one. the truth is: the main revelation is nothing special and it should be done in other ways. we’re not that invested in certain characters that it becomes interesting what happens at the end. And when the movie wanted to increase the tension with dialogues and ambiance…it forgot that the best points of this were the pace at the beggining and the constant revelations thrown to you.

It also has some inconsistent scenes that don’t seem to fit very well in the rest of the narrative. they’re just there because the script says so. But… we can ask that they’re really consistent or not. Don’t think so.

Oriol Paulo wrote this. His next three films definitely solved the pace problems you found here. I think is more interesting to watch them than this. The directing is good, the photography also, the acting is compelling, belen rueda is definitely a good actress. But the lack of rythm and the appearance of characters we’re not invested since the beggining ruined this for me. I would recommend more to watch el cuerpo or contratiempo, or even durante la tormenta – even though i don’t think his films are brilliant they’re definitely more interesting and intriguing than this.
