Jim Carrey makes a Disaster waiting to Happen in to an Enjoyable 90 minutes,
Mr Popper’s Penguins is a good movie with a reasonably well developed storyline and a talented cast. It’s an enjoyable family film that had many funny moments and is also quite sweet, it easily could have been a disaster, but I think Jim Carrey did a great job of making it watchable, he may have only done this for a pay check but he looked like he was having fun and really became this character. However, It certainly has many flaws, it throws far too much conflict and issues at Mr. Popper, a divorce, a difficult job and kids who hate him, they seemed like too much problems to give its audience for a ninety minute film, and adding the penguins didn’t feel as significant because of the real life struggles that faced him. I found Ophelia Lovibond’s performance unbearable, Pippi was a very annoying character, her constant use of words beginning with p wasn’t funny to begin with, and they just kept it coming. It has its flaws, but Mr. Popper’s Penguins is still a fun film that I would recommend to a family if you ever see it on television and have some time to kill.

Mr Popper gets sent six penguins, which makes the man’s life a lot more difficult, although he starts to grow fond of them when he discovers the joy it brings his children.

Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey) is a very successful real estate broker in Manhattan. Unfortunately, he is so driven that his beautiful wife, Amanda (Carla Gugino) decided to get a divorce and she has main custody of their two children, Janie (Madeline Carroll) and Billy. The kids don’t even want to spend the weekend in their dad’s plush penthouse. Popper’s bad parenting skills, however, are somewhat the result of his own father, who traveled the world and had little time for his only son. The two have not seen each other in years. Meanwhile, Mr. P is trying hard to get a longtime restaurant owner, Mrs. Van Gundy (Angela Lansbury) to sell the eatery to his firm. This would please the boss (Philip Baker Hall) very much, for the corporation has plans to demolish the old place and build something else. Luckily, Mrs. VG is a smart gal and she is, so far, resisting Mr. P’s hard sell. One day, a big box arrives at Popper’s penthouse. In it, first, is a letter telling of his father’s passing on his latest trip to Antarctica. Lo and behold, the rest of the box holds an actual PENGUIN. What the heck do you do with such a bird? Before Mr. P can figure it out, the real estate agent goes for another meeting with Mrs. VG. When he gets back, the penguin has turned the bathroom into his own ocean. Uh oh. More trouble ensues when another box of five penguins arrives just at the moment of Billy’s birthday party at dad’s. Thinking quickly, Papa P says they are his son’s gift and both of the kids are enchanted with the birds. Even Amanda’s feelings start to thaw at the sight of the darling creatures. Before long, Mr. P, who must hide the penguins from the building’s management AND the zoo officials, learns to give the birds an environment more suited to them, that is, chilly, and he teaches them how to dance and appreciate Chaplin movies. But, how long will he be able to care for animals that are not made to be pets? And, will Mr. P be able to land the big sale and Amanda’s affections again? This is a very darling family movie, with actual penguins, and a zany plot. Carrey, of course, is tailor-made for zany and he does a great job. So nice, too, to see Ms. Lansbury, who handles her key role with ease. Gugino, the lovely Carroll, Hall, James Tupper, and all of the others do nice work as well. Naturally, the Manhattan setting and the plush penthouse are very eye-catching while the costumes, photography, script and fast-paced direction make the movie very enjoyable. So, Hop down to the road to Pop, everyone, and then head to the library to get the outstanding children’s book of the same title.
