Reviews:

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘No Good Deed’.

Sure it isn’t anything incredible and is rather simple, but it delivers on action and brings tension. It also features very good performances Idris Elba (Colin) – somewhat iffy accent aside – and Taraji P. Henson (Terri) – two actors I enjoy. The plot is simple but it’s executed well, it doesn’t even have the chance to drag either due to the short 83 minute run time.

Not much more to note. A suitably entertaining flick from 2014 by Sam Miller, who also directed Elba in the outstanding television series ‘Luther’.

Generic Guff.

No Good Deed is actually not a bad film as such, it sticks rigidly to a formula and has all the requisite requirements – however ridiculous – for a home invasion thriller, and does it competently. The problem is that it has absolutely nothing new to appeal to anyone who has been watching movies through the 80s and 90s.

The 1990s was particularly a thriving hot-bed for such thriller fare, where some unhinged nut-case – male or female – would impose themselves upon some amiable good person’s life, and then unleash mentally distorted hell upon them. Sam Miller’s film is just a lazy retread of what has gone long before. Only he and his backers think that shifting the focus to black characters somehow makes it more vibrant. It doesn’t.

Idris Alba is a fine actor (in great physical shape as usual), and Taraji P. Henson is a more than effective actress, but the turgid screenplay on offer here does them no favours, where even an intended “big reveal” is hamstrung by the familiarity of it all. If one is fortunate to be of a youthful enough age and lucky enough to be viewing this thriller format for the first time? Then this works, it absolutely does. The more mature film lovers, however, will be jaded to the point of sleep status. And no, that’s not meant to be patronising. 4/10

Frustrating
One of those frustrating films where everything happens that wouldn’t normally happen and things just happen for the sake of it.

All too predictable and lacking the right execution for a thriller
After five years, a violent convict Colin, now heads to the his parole board hearing. Due to lacking evidence, he was only convicted at a minor case of involuntary manslaughter instead of the heavier serially killing. The board dismisses his parole plea, thus he tricks his escape, killing his escort guards. Colin tracks his old girlfriend Alexis, only to find her with another man. He sneaks into her house, finding a note from her boyfriend before confronting her. He gets angry and kills her when she admits cheating on him. At night as a storm rages on, Colin accidentally crashes his car onto a tree. He then goes to the house of Terri, a mother of two, which was earlier seen being left by her husband for his dad’s birthday. Being kind, Terri accepts Colin in her house. Soon, Terri’s friend Meg visits. Meg is intrigued by Colin. So he kills her when she tries to find out more.

Soon Colin can’t hold on to his lies thus he takes her and the kids out of the house. On the road Terri signals a police cruiser discreetly, thus the car gets pulled over. Terri doubts her decision when she talks to the cop, as her kids are still in the car with Colin. The cop figures it out but he’s too late as Colin opens fire on him. Colin takes the family to Alexis’ place. As Colin deals with the car’s alarm, Terri frees herself from her bonds and manages to answer a call on Alexis’ phone. It’s her husband Jeffrey on the end. She tells him that Alexis is dead and to call the cops on Colin. As Colin finished taking care of the alarm and heads back in, Terri hides her children. Colin catches up with her and there is struggle. In the end Terri manages to get a hold of Colin’s gun a shoots him repeatedly. The police then come with Jeffrey but Terri refuses his apology.

The story is another one of those all so predictable plot moves. It opens up nicely looking like a sophisticated big-budget movie, showing the news report to summarize the background. But after that it look like the movie loses the character as Idris Elba’s acting doesn’t seem to really support all the mood built by the news report opening. The movie then continues on building the Colin character, focusing on his nature, that it left little duration to develop Terri’s character until the main conflict arrives.

The movie really tries hard to emphasize on its thriller aspect. It does good on the addition of those flash backs and the ringing voices to build on Colin’s potential for violence. But then again, Terri is not really left any room to build on her character. Thus what viewers imagine is the residue of Taraji Benson’s former roles, most of which have quite a big comedic aura. This feeds on those slightly funny scenes and dialog lines, making the viewers laugh harder than those are designed to stimulate.

The scenes on Terri’s house don’t really have their thriller parts stand out. Besides that the dialog is filled with more than adequate unintentionally funny remarks, the acting doesn’t really help to build the suspense mood on those scenes. Only the suspense music and the thunderous storm sound effects and exterior light and rain play help the thriller mood there. What may be excused from the insufficient thriller mood is the police stop scenes.

The movie also only serve us one twist over the entire movie. And also, that only twist is vividly predictable ever since we see Terri’s husband leaving and the note on Alexis’ room. It thus is quite a disappointment to find that the movie has build its story so slowly and taking most of its fair duration to have no spectacular twist than that.

The acting overall is just another so-so performance, not even an okay one. Idris Elba and Taraji Benson seemed not really ready to act out lead and significant roles on a full feature movie. Elba can really get Colin’s violent nature surfaces, but fails to bring anymore color out of his character. Benson’s Terri, having less duration and story room to be developed, is not supported by Benson’s acting to make the mother character more alive.

The verdict is a 5 out of 10 score for No Good Deed (2014). A recommendation is really a no from me. It’s an entertainment only if you can stand the disappointments it causes on your expectations.
