★★★½ Rewatched 17 Sep, 2020

Surly goth teenagers dabbling in the occult have become a horror movie cliché, but with Adam MacDonald’s follow-up to his excellent debut Backcountry, it is an effective and compelling slow burn. With great performances from the leads (including Laurie Holden of The Mist and The Walking Dead), it explores what happens when a troubled teen follows up on her darkest wish. The final act is creepy and disturbing even though it comes to an abrupt end too early leaving us wanting more.

A slow-burn horror that doesn’t quite burn enough.

Before I get started let me just say that angst and anger are not the same thing. I have read so many reviews that have described the character of Leah as angst-ridden. Angst is fear or anxiety, often about the future, it is not the same thing as anger…

Leah is a teen living with her grieving mother. She likes black metal and the occult. She’s not completely off the rails, still respects her mother, but she is clearly dealing with the loss of her father as is her mother. Her mum decides it is time to uproot from the family home and shift to a cabin in the woods. After a massive argument the angry teen summons a demon/witch/entity to kill her mum, and spends the rest of the film regretting and trying to reverse the ritual.

There’s some good acting, some nicely fleshed out characters with a lot of grey moral areas, no one is completely good or completely bad. The mother is simultaneously cold, selfish, distant, loving, caring and concerned. The daughter is angry, upset, respectful and loving.

The witch is a little like the shark in jaws, all subtle out of focus, with only the odd decent look at it. That is both a good and a bad thing. Fans of horror might feel let down, but fans of thrillers might think it is all a little too much

There are some monumentally bad decisions which are hard to get over, and the ending lacked some punch, but it is mostly a well made quiet film.

Well done, scary
The story does start out at a slower pace however the dynamics between the mother – daughter, their fight and her reaction reminded me of the tense relationship I had growing up at times with my own mother. Unfortunately she makes a rash decision and the consequences play out in a very creepy and disturbing manor.

I really liked her time in the gift shop, the idea that the evil is within etc. Well done. Will look for more from this writer.

slow burning, tension filled occult film
Pyewacket (17) is Writer and Director Adam Macdonald’s second feature length project. after the pleasant surprise that was “Backcountry” I readily awaited Pyewacket.

A frustrated, angst-ridden teenage girl (played by Nicole Munoz) awakens something in the woods when she naively performs an occult ritual to evoke a witch to kill her mother (played by Laurie Holden).

Pyewacket utilizes a lot of tight closeups to trap the viewer and really build up the tension. the story unfolds slowly but this is not a negative. Macdonald takes his time building a realistic and compelling relationship between the mother and daughter. he gets us invested and then slowly pours on the tension until things escalate out of control in the third act.

the film really leans on the performances from the leads. as stated above, the relationship between the mother and daughter is key. it invests us. without the wonderful performances from Holden and Munoz this film wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is. another key element of the film is the sound design. The pyewacket creature/entity is barely seen in the film (thankfully, revealing the monster relieves all tension. this is something that Macdonald clearly understands. he holds off on showing us the creature as long as he can) so the film relies heavily on the sound design and the score to provide maximum tension and mystery.

something I must also applaud Pyewacket for is it’s script. while it is quite a simple story it avoids becoming too conventional and plays with expectations quite a bit. particularly towards the end of the film. AND horror fans and film fans in general have been screaming for horror films to stop with the ridiculous jump scares and cheap scares, so here’s a film to satisfy that thirst for real horror.

overall, Pyewacket is one of the best horror films released since the year 2000. Adam Macdonald is clearly a director who understands and is passionate about the genre.
