**About the two girls who stayed behind on their school break.**

Also known as ‘February’, is about two teen girls from closely, but a different timeline. It was the boarding school break and everyone heading their home, but a couple of girls stay behind as they have no other choice. While waiting for their parents to pick them up, those few days do not go well with them. What it is and how the story ends, you should watch it to learn.

It is not a must see, or even it does not look fresh enough. Though very dark and there’s a moment it peaks with its suspense. But it could not hold any further, or keep us expecting what might come. Both the tales that told parallely was distinguished at the end with a small twist. But not everything was fully explained. So you will be disappointed a bit on that ground on overall film.

Those young actresses were really good. Roberts and Shipka who never meet given the best performances in their respective roles. An horror with a less traditional narration. Feels familiar, but not really as entirely. Because if you don’t know what its genre, you could anticipate a regular drama-thriller, but they manipulated the genre very well that you won’t fully able to unpuzzle, even after the end. Just one time watchable film, in a common sense, but there are people who like this kind of film better than usual horror films.

Love how this movie focused on three characters and the way they intersect towards the end. This film goes satanic and you know something more is going down coming to the climax.

This movie does have some slow pacing so this might not be for everyone.

Well Done Mr. Perkins!
The Blackcoat’s Daughter, or originally titled February is the first feature film from Oz Perkins, and it’s warmly welcomed and loved if you love a slow- build horror in the likes of It Follows, The Babdook, The Tall Man, or recently surprise hit The Witch. This film follows the same beat, while not necessarily executing it in a lively fashion it does deserve to stand on it’s own merit.

Winter break is approaching so the students of Bradford Academy are all leaving to rejoin their parents over the two weeks… Expect for the exception of Kat (Kiernan Shipka) truly haunting each time on screen; and Rose (Lucy Boynton) who are forced to await the arrival of their parents who mysteriously fail to retrieve them. With their time spent there, we also meet Joan (Emma Roberts) another kindred soul trudging her way to the unknown. And thus, begins our film… A look at three different woman bound by a constant fear, ever present throughout the film.

For a first time director, Oz gracefully masters the camera as he glides slowly across the scenery meticulously acknowledging every shot… From a long tracking shot down a dark hallway to the swinging of a door in the wind. Every detail cleverly puts you on ease as you await the next scene. Kiernan Shipka controls the screen as she chillingly embodies the physical turmoil of an adolescent girl confused and unsure of herself… The rest of this little cast are also good… with the exception of Emma Roberts showing us that she can also do more than American Horror Story or Scream Queens. While good, the film does fall in structure during it’s second act and end as we never truly understand the intentions of our characters or simply where the movie is headed… while the tone stays the same… haunting and melancholy. The film can loose you if you are not truly invested during it’s final two acts.

Overall, The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a well crafted horror that cleverly cuts between three characters while still juggling the fact that it is indeed a slow-burn horror well worth your time and money.

Not Picnic
What if two girls, strangers to each other, were abandoned by their parents just as their boarding school closed for winter break? And there was something creepy going on in the backstory? Let’s find out.

Icily atmospheric and bleak, eventually bloody and without mercy. The timeline is diced up, so you’re mostly guessing about who did what to whom and why. The story is interesting but not fully developed, so I was left hanging between The Dead Girl with Britney Murphy and The Ward by Carpenter.

The performances are good, but the dialogue is mostly exposition and empty Q&A sessions (often with no A), so character development is minimal.

Photography and locations are good, although I have no idea what American cinema will do without exteriors of cars coming to a halt.

There is one major problem that ruins the movie: the music. It casts an eerie spell, but manages to interrupt everything. Ringing telephone in the dark? Cue the music. Disembodied spooky voice? Actor trying to act? Just smother it in music. Total overkill by the experienced music editor who has worked with this director before.

Overall: interesting effort, but the music makes it stink when you take the wrapper off.
