Kirk, Star Trek 2009). With each of these celebrated actors Shatner explores the pressures and pitfalls that came along with donning the Starfleet uniform and reveals for the first time his own embarrassment over the role which made him a household name. With the help of his fellow captains Shatner learns to respect his work on the original Star Trek and finishes the film with a new perspective on life, death, and the legacy he will leave behind. The Captains also delves into each of the actors’ lives and careers leading up to their landmark television performances. The film pays special attention to Shatner’s own acting roots, tracking his journey from humble beginnings at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and CBC Radio, to headlining Broadway shows, and eventually getting his big break in Hollywood at the helm of Gene Roddenberry’s ambitious brainchild. As an extra treat, whilst in Stratford, Ontario, Shatner sits down with his dear friend Christopher Plummer. The Canadian legend of the stage and screen was instrumental in Shatner’s young career and was rewarded by the original captain years later with the role of bloodthirsty Klingon General Chang in Star Trek VI. The Captains is a unique documentary which examines much more than mere acting and the shows these people worked on. The film tells deep emotional tales of human beings struggling to do what they love most and perform to a high enough standard as to make all their sacrifices worth while. The Captains is also boundless fun as personified by its gregarious, charming, and surprisingly soulful host.
Plot: The Captains is a feature length documentary film written and directed by William Shatner. The film follows Shatner as he interviews the other actors whom have portrayed Starship captains within the illustrious science-fiction franchise.

What a great movie…
I have fallen in love with the documentaries on Netflix.
I found this movie, and was very pleased with it’s insights and depth. People love to have an easy target, and William Shatner has been that for a lot of critics, but I think this movie will show his deeper side. William Shatner seems to have such an easy time talking and getting people to interact with him. Seeing the scene where he walks through the convention floor shows his talent for identifying with people.
It was a wonderful glimpse into the lives of these great actors. Thanks William for making this film.
You should watch this film, and I hope when you do you enjoy it as much as i did.
Has to be one of the most boring documentaries ever made!
There was nothing on TV, so I downloaded this utter rubbish 🙁 I loved all of the star trek shows and movies (except DS9) so was really looking forward to watching this. Badly written, the actors seemed not only uncomfortable but many seemed to say the least eccentric! This program does none of them any justice. Please DO NOT waste your time on this utter rubbish! I should have downloaded my little pony maybe, or something with a story. Anyone who actually enjoys this can probably be found most days in a dark alley wearing a rain mac selling dodgy pirate movies. I read with interest other reviews of this show and can only imagine they are trying to lull you into wasting your bandwidth or wasting an hour and a half of your life watching it. To close, if you really want to see this, get a bottle of vodka in and switch it on just before you pass out!
