It was quite hard to watch it till the end. All decorations, costumes, details are magnificent. But that’s all. Characters are dull, acting is lifeless. Better watch Vidocq (2001) one more time.

Crime and punishment Napoleonic style…..
Based on the colourful life of a real figure from 19th century French history who turned from criminal to sleuth, The Emperor of Paris, is an engrossing watch.

Beautiful sets and costumes merge transparently with fascinating characters and a decent story of crime and redemption of a kind. Vincent Cassel hands in a sterling performance as François Vidocq, who is considered by many the father of modern criminology.

The focus of this film is more on action than Vidocq’s sleuthing abilities. It is a shame a little more emphasis was not placed on his background as a private investigator but this film still functions well as a robust adventure set in Napoleonic France.

That said, if you are looking for a cinematic biographic leave this one alone. Its key focus is entertainment and its very successful in this sense but does only provide a shallow allusion to the life of the real Vidocq. 8/10 from me.
