Distraught after her death, he decides to dust off her old car and travel to Germany to visit his estranged mother. On the ferry to Italy, he meets Matthias, a talkative, inquisitive young German who is on his way home. Matthias persuades Victor to take him along and as they drive north, Victor’s uptight, repressive personality clashes with the more free-spirited Matthias. But they soon find common emotional ground as their summer road trip takes unexpected turns. A tender story of self-discovery, love and family, in its many forms.
Plot: Ex-championship diver Victoras whiles away his days on the Greek coast, toiling away at a factory with only his dreams, medals and grandmother for company. When a phone call summons him to Germany, a simple road trip is the answer – that is until he crosses paths with the handsome Mathias – a free-spirited hitchhiker who tempts Victoras to take the road not taken.

Thank you so much to the director for treating the viewer with intelligence and respect. Why do we always need words when silences and images say so much? This film is brilliant in every way. Nowadays, directors tend to create long and deeply detailed stories. In this case, it all seems so simple and 1 hour and 20 minutes gives us all the right answers. What I loved the most is that every country has its own symbolism. Greek, the departure. Italy, discovering and affection. Germany, the hard truth, moving forward.
After work, every day I watch it again. Does this have a meaning? I’ll leave you think about the answer. Yes or no?
Call Me by Your Name 2.0
Most years there’s one gay film that ends up being “the one to watch” over everything else. For me, this is it.
Whether you liked Call Me by Your Name is a good indication of whether you’ll enjoy this. It’s similar in that it’s a relaxed pace and chock full of European scenery (most of the movie is on the road) although differs in that it’s gentle and there’s no overwhelming drama. There’s also a lot of weird similarities like the slightly awkward dance scene or the great summer shirt shortage. The passion isn’t quite as magical but there’s still great chemistry between the two leads.
If leisurely world cinema is your thing this shouldn’t disappoint; there’s lots of sweeping cinematography which makes this one best enjoyed on a large screen with your drink of choice.
Overall a very sweet movie that won’t leave you a mess by the time the end credits roll.
