Johansson makes a great performance in an unlikely role, adding great sensuality to the film, even with her very different looking.
The story and movie on itself is a rarety. Very fresh but, also, kind of an unfinished joke.
A total artistic wank piece. The plot moves at a glacial speed, thanks to all the filler in it. Sure, it’s about a curious alien living among humans and consuming them in some mysterious black fluid that only said alien can walk on.
Other than that, it is absolutely boring as hell and totally lacking in any amount of entertainment. The cinematography itself is great though only in some limited moments. I have a thing for beautiful landscapes but let’s be realistic, I watch National Geographic and BBC documentaries for that. Otherwise, a lengthy look out in thick white fog from within a motor vehicle is not my idea of an entertaining nor intriguing scene.
In short. Absolute rubbish. After the first five minutes, I realised the glacial pace of this film and watched it at 8x playback speed to try and find some semblance of a climax. Nup, nothing.
Don’t waste your time. It failed financially and if you dare to still watch it, you will realise why.
Intriguing and haunting but not as polarising as I expected.
Under The Skin divided critics in a way that suggested we have something truly new and special. Some claimed it abysmal, some claimed it a masterpiece. Instead, it’s somewhere in the middle, but on the good side of the fence. While I can try and look past the Scarlett Johansson oversaturation that we’ve endured the past year or two, which has had some delights with Her, her casting here is quite interesting as the alien intends to be a desirable woman, though I do have doubts about the claims that scenes were improvised with strangers. Scotland isn’t that cut off from culture. Unfortunately those scenes where they try and be authentic feel quite clunky and eventually repetitive. Instead it’s best when it’s cinematic rather than documentary- esque as its cinematography is quite exquisite when it’s controlled. It has an intriguing atmosphere, one not as unsettling as it could be but it does have its moments. If only its plot had a bit more structure. It studies the nature of prejudices and the terror of rape in a way that’s quite overt and would possibly be more powerful if they were more subtle but its metaphors are very thought-provoking. However, the ending is particularly distressing and has haunted me for days. Under The Skin is not as strong as Glazer’s Sexy Beast but it’s nice to see him behind the camera again as he has a strong vision, if one that feels a little lacking.
Complete and utter garbage. Kubrick would roll over in his grave.
Haven’t seen a worse movie in years. A lot of people say that plot ideas were left out so that the viewer could make their own theories about it, and I love when a movie does that. This is not one of those movies, main plot points weren’t just left out, there isn’t any. An hour and forty minutes of Scarlett Johanson getting naked, seducing guys, and killing them in some weird vortex pool inside a house. And… that’s the whole movie, I wish I was joking about that but I’m not.
Every time I thought something significant was going to happen to move the story along, it was just more of the same. Kubrick would roll over in his grave for this movie being compared to anything he wrote. 2001 was one of the best movies ever, it was abstract, beautiful, and thought provoking. This movie was none of those things, it was boring and the same from start to finish.
