Completely captivating
I was hooked after the first five minutes and come heaven, hell or high water, I was going to see Downton Abbey twice, the second time to pick up the points which I knew would be too fast, and possibly convoluted, to follow the first time round. I have watched Masterpiece since the inaugural with Alistair Cooke, and I can’t remember anything as engaging and entertaining as this. As a cousin of an English family with deep affection for the monarchy and respect for the aristocracy, my perspective is an odd mix of Democratic ideals, old-time Republican values and curiosity about and appreciation of the social structure which prevailed so long in England. Downton Abbey appears to present a very balanced depiction of the social, political, economic and historical forces which drove the lives and fortunes of the classes and produced strange and almost incomprehensible behavior to comply with an unwritten, all-pervasive code. I am completely fascinated by the events and reactions and what would appear to be almost puppet-like behavior on occasion. I pray for a sequel.

Magnificent British drama
This is a story about a British aristocratic family living in their huge estate during around ten years from the time of Titanic disaster until the mid twenties. In one way a modern variation of the 70s show upstairs downstairs. It is an epic saga about this family’s endeavours during a period of change on many levels of society and the world.

The attention to detail with the set and costumes is absolute perfection. No detail is overlooked and every episode is really made with so much devotion and ambition to create an encapsulating authentic experience. True British quality.

The casting set is excellent. Very high and even quality on most actors. Everyone stands out in his own way. No one shines above the other and no bummers. All characters have true depth, subtlety, identity and variation with a very realistic feel. Your really feel as an old close friend to all people at Downton Abbey.

The storyline is riveting. It is not judgemental or trying to educate us about right or wrong, good or bad. It is just showing us how people lived at that time. And it really succeeds on all levels. And the relationship between the aristocracy and the service staff (upstairs / downstairs) is showed with a mutual respect and dignity between the two class levels. A respectful friendship. The series has from some been been criticised for this. (aristocracy should be evil people and servant staff all good) It feels very refreshing that this is not the case, so this is a story about people and humans on all levels and classes.

I could go on and on. One of the best TV series of all times. A pure joy to watch and I feel privileged to have been taking part of this unforgettable epic drama. Enjoyed every minute of it. Wow.
