I loved it and I am 65 years of age. I agree the expletives didn’t add anything and were not necessary but it was well written and very well acted. If you want same old same old then watch Muppets Christmas Carol or Alistair Sims original (both of which I love) but this was different and I enjoyed it
A Christmas Carol by any other name….
It’s always difficult when a contemporary production uses the title or notion of a classic work to add value to itself rather than stand alone as a new piece. This version was A Christmas Carol in name only. It’s values were different,it’s conclusion very much of the twenty first century and there was the all-too-familiar sense that the adaptation hadn’t really grasped what the author wanted his audience to understand or simply thought they could improve on it a little. The supplanting of contemporary morality on top of a Victorian backdrop didn’t really work and served only to undermine the new notion of redemption being offered as an upgrade on the original. The need to explain the purpose for the visit of the spirits and the reasoning behind it (as well as the notion of life after death as being a living purgatory) was an epic fail. It fell far short of Dickens’ concept that the dead were continually paying a penance diabolically attached in some way to their sin and that their real hell was seeing what they should have done in their lifetime and being prevented from now ever doing it.- how scary would that have been if they could have stuck to it! Scrooge himself was a pantomime villain. Dickens idea of bad decisions being the only difference between him and us and thus giving us a chance to identify with him slightly and route for his reclamation, gave way to an absurd made up background that would have played out better in Peaky Blinders than as scene setting for a classic Victorian novel…and so it goes on. All these unfavourable comparisons are invited because the drama was sold as A Christmas Carol rather than the fantasy it actually was and that was simply derivative of the original as many have been over the years. If it had been, we could have watched something rather clever, very well-acted and absolutely riveting at times without constantly having to draw it back to the book to which it had little connection and no accuracy or understanding. Perhaps those other reviewers who then condemned the piece would not have felt short-changed and those who did want something new could have enjoyed it for the contemporary light entertainment it was without feeling the need to ascribe to it the virtues of a serious work that it does not possess. With all the acting talent on display as well as the brilliant special effects employed there is little doubt that if anyone actually did make the novel as Dickens intended it to be understood, the potential is there for it to be a masterpiece of film. Just don’t hold your breath.
