The rootin’ist tootin’ist new western this side of the Mississippi (and the Thames too!)
I loved this movie. It is brilliantly shot (pun intended), the performances are fab and the action is as it should be in a good western – quick, kinetic and brutal! This is not your run of the mill western either, it has a fresh twist on the genre and a sting in its tail!!

Don’t go by the reviews offered here on IMDb, some of which are highly praiseworthy for the film. The IMDb rating is more indicative of the quality of the movie and the characters. You can compare it somewhat to the town in which the story takes place, which is to say, it’s on a par with Bathwater. The acting is really dodgy, and the dialog at times is reminiscent of what you might experience in an early talkie picture from the Thirties, whereby characters over enunciate and there’s a slight pause in the dialog as one person waits to speak just a bit before delivering their own line. That’s especially true for the two businessmen in league with the crooked Sheriff Noone (Chris Rogers). Watch the camera focus on each individually as they have a conversation, it just doesn’t come across as natural.

The story starts out with a bank robbery of stolen gold bars, but it’s not what it seems, as the self appointed sheriff and his posse take off after the three robbers, who split up with one of them mortally wounded. Not only did the outlaws have a rendezvous point, but it appears that the sheriff knew it would be occupied by a separate band of criminals unassociated with the first. The coincidence and timing of the disparate groups coming together leads to a series of shootouts that leave parties on all sides buying a ticket to Boot Hill. If you happen to catch this flick, take note of that double stick of dynamite that outlaw Billy had originally. How did it wind up in Romford’s (Richard Sandling) hand before it blew the cave sky high?

If there’s a bit of salvation to the picture, it would be the character of Mrs. Timms (Charlotte Mounter), who’s husband was killed during the bank holdup. Her mournful walk is a bit static and she doesn’t speak, in fact, it looks like she just stepped out of a horror movie. But she livens up the action with a merciless six gun that takes out anyone left of the posse before the story ends. “A Fistful of Lead” is a title that calls to mind all those great spaghetti Westerns of the Sixties and Seventies, but be aware, this one comes with a good helping of cheese.
