A Patch of Golden Blue
A wonderful 1965 film dealing with racism, blindness and a memorable spirit.Elizabeth Hartman, whose tragic suicide years later deprived us of an outstanding talent, gives a strong performance as the blind daughter, blinded by a bigoted mother,(Oscar winner, Shelley Winters, who in a fit of rage, through something at a man that missed him but hit the daughter.
Winters, as Roseann, is the embodiment of bigotry. Screaming, filthy looking, and a racist all the way, Winters captivated audiences while receiving her second supporting actress, the first being for “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
In a chance meeting, the Hartman character meets a kindly black man, well played by Sidney Poitier who befriends her. Shocked that she is uneducated, he begins meeting the girl in the park and talks to her. The girl does not know that Poitier is black. When Roseann finds out what is going on, sparks fly.
In the end, Poitier is able to make arrangements for the girl to be educated in a school for the blind.
The audience is actually able to feel what is must be like to be sightless by Hartman’s convincing performance. We share her suffering, her pain, and her endurance.
In the twilight of his career, actor Wallace Ford is marvelous as the girl’s grandfather.
