Good acting in small drama
Every actor in the movie is perfectly suited to their character, and you can’t day that about every movie you see.
Rupert is in love with a ray of sunshine in the human form of Cary Elwes, and Colin is screaming for the revolution to begin. The movie is about them, what living in England at the time would have been like, and what living in a boys school was like also.
The boys seem to accept Rupert because it is widely assumed that he will grow out of it. When he declares it as a way of life, his unhappiness begins. He is able to be friends with Colin Firth because they are both outcasts in their way (“The Commie and the queer” is how he describes them at one point”).
The movie is very enjoyable and it is worth a look. You’ve spent ninety minutes doing stupider things than watching this.
Bad form old chap!
Originally I assumed that it was just slow to start, but it turned out that the pace had been set and it didn’t improve.
I’m not sure there was any point in ageing Rupert for the prologue and epilogue as it really didn’t bare any relevance to the story. I was expecting to see his journey in to Marxism as he went through University and what he then did with it afterwards as per the synopsis, but this is just a story about spoiled brats at a public school that want to get their own way.
I actually like public school romances like this usually, but found that it didn’t concentrate on the love or the homosexual “sin” enough. In fact it didn’t really concentrate on any specific element enough to make the film about anything.
It’s a shame too, because there are some talented actors in here that really weren’t put to their best uses.
I did like the rapport that Rupert’s character had with Colin’s, but nothing came of any of it.
You don’t even get to see a proper snogging session, let alone more than a quick glimpse of someone’s buttocks.
It was just lacking all of the things that could have turned it in to something special and important.
