be transported to the 1700s
* A love story and the value of being honest to yourself is what Belle is about. This movie transports you to the 1700s England. Based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle “Belle”, this tale is about a young mulato girl named Belle that is brought into her father’s house and caretaker of her great-uncle Lord Mansfield a honorable Chief Judge and wife. Belle has all the rights and privileges of upper society but her face reflects her slave mother and the prevailing social prejudice keeps her from being totally accepted into the formal social circles. At the same time, she befriends her cousin, who she considers a sister and is also given residence to this estate after her mother dies and her father abandons her. This story is beautifully layered with the issues of equality and slavery but is not preachy. It merely shows how the matters of the heart can’t be prevented by the color of your skin. This coming of age story is masterfully told. I saw this film as part of the Atlanta Film Festival.
A gentle film with serious undertones
14 June 2014 Film of Choice at The Plaza Dorchester Tonight – Belle. History has been pretty bleak for certain members of society and especially for those deemed not good enough to be part of our society. This film, based on a true story, is the tale of a girl born out of wedlock to a black mother and a white father and his determination to take responsibility for her after her mothers death. Left with her Great Uncle while her father goes to take his position in the Royal Navy, she is raised with affection as a member of the family but not quite at the same level as her cousin/sister with whom she grows up. At the death of her father she becomes a much more desirable match for marriage due to her inheritance and the story leads to many interesting and shocking realisations about prejudice and the class system. Entwined with the tale of her Great Uncle having to rule on an issue with a slave ship we are carried along on the realisations that some people have to take a stand to uphold what is right. Beautifully acted by all, especially Gugu Mbatha-Raw who played Dido Elizabeth Belle. She brought a graceful quality to the part with more than a hint of grim determination to bring the colour of her skin to attention as an equal not an inferior member of society. Penelope Wilton was brilliant as always, playing Lady Mary Murray, a spinster aunt whose only love was thwarted by her mother. As always with films based on fact I come away feeling my knowledge of history is very poor and I should perhaps educate myself a bit more. A gentle film with serious undertones.
