When a guard cancels the visit of his mother, Elizabeth Stroud, due to a violation of the internal rules, he stabs and kills the guard and goes to trial three times. He is sentenced to be executed by the gallows, but his mother appeals to President Woodrow Wilson who commutes his sentence to life imprisonment. However, the warden, Harvey Shoemaker, decides to keep Stroud in solitary for the rest of his life. One day, Stroud finds a sparrow that has fallen from the nest in the yard and he raises the bird until it is strong enough to fly. Stroud finds a motivation for his life raising and caring for birds and becomes an expert in birds. He marries Stella Johnson and together they run a business, providing medicine developed by Stroud. But a few years after, Stroud is transferred to Alcatraz and has to leave his birds behind.
Plot: After killing a prison guard, convict Robert Stroud faces life imprisonment in solitary confinement. Driven nearly mad by loneliness and despair, Stroud’s life gains new meaning when he happens upon a helpless baby sparrow in the exercise yard and nurses it back to health. Despite having only a third grade education, Stroud goes on to become a renowned ornithologist and achieves a greater sense of freedom and purpose behind bars than most people find in the outside world.

One of Lancaster’s finest parts
I’ve just seen this film on TV, it being several years since I saw it last. What a fine job Burt Lancaster makes of portraying Robert Stroud, a two-times murderer who finds inner peace when he nurses a young sparrow back to health in his prison cell. More birds follow, and in time he becomes an authority on bird pathology and develops several cures for diseases which were thought untreatable.
The quiet dignity that Lancaster gives to the part may or may not have been a genuine part of the real Robert Stroud but it is deeply moving, and the Director’s careful treatment of the relationship he has with his long-term warder who grows old alongside him is one part of the film which can bring a lump to the throat.
Of course the film carries the message that not all prisoners should be treated with brutal disdain and could be seen as just another left-wing handwringer from a period when this kind of thing was popular among movie-makers, but it is certainly a top-notch example.
A Powerful Story and Holds Up Very Well
A surly convicted murderer (Burt Lancaster) held in permanent isolation seemingly redeems himself when he becomes a renowned bird expert.
I added the word “seemingly” to IMDb’s plot summary because I think whether or not he redeems himself is a matter of opinion. In fact, it is something worth discussing — does he redeem himself? Does he rehabilitate himself? I think it unclear; while he surely finds a passion for something and achieves a level of respect, does this justify his crimes? I would also like to single out Karl Malden. Malden is not as well-known as Burt Lancaster (and even Lancaster is not as well known today). Malden showed a great range of emotion here and I think the transformation of the warden is every bit as remarkable as Stroud’s growth. And Malden’s career is quite impressive… people should make more of an effort to see his work.
