Obviously doesn’t hold a candle to the original, and some of the acting is pretty genuinely bad, but it knows what it wants and it goes for it. What it wants, here being: To be hamstrung to keeping in step with its predecessor but also being wildly different enough to piss anyone off who was expecting an actual “remake”.

_Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._

Eye eye, what we got ere then?

There’s a running eyeball motif throughout this revamp/reimaging of Bob Clark’s much revered culter of the same name (1974), after sitting through it you may, like me, feel like extracting your own eyeballs and playing ping-pong with them!

Bunch of pretty sorority girls get menaced and mangled by a deranged killer who has come home for Christmas…

This lacks everything that made Bob Clark’s film so effective. The less is more approach has gone, thus there is very little suspense, and in place is a gigantic back story for the killer. The characterisation of the girls, some acted by some very capable actresses, is practically non existent, so very little emotional heft to draw you into a state of caring for them. There’s some good gore on show, but since tonally the pic is all over the place, it’s never once scary or ironically funny.

A poor show all round. 3/10

So it’s not the original…but there’s plenty of fun to be had here!
I know I will get heat for having enjoyed Black Christmas 2006. Hell, I can’t really even call this a “good” movie. It is severely flawed in many ways, and it’s not even closely comparable to the original. Monster holes are present in the story line. The cinematography at times is choppy, dark, and grainy. And, most of all, there is ZERO suspense. How can a movie with such negativity possibly get a 7 out of 10?Well, technical goofs aside, there is a lot of fun to be had here!

It has a completely different atmosphere and tone than the original had, as well as a completely different approach at it’s villain. For one, the violence and murders in the 2006 version are much gorier and more over the top! Okay, so the original’s approach at implied violence worked much better, but I appreciated the filmmaker’s aiming for something different! I had a lot of fun watching Billy maim and dismember all of the sorority girls and their boyfriends! The kills were absolutely crazy! A lot of blood splashing!

Unfortunately, the characters here, unlike in 1974, are purely 2-dimensional and unforgivably stupid. However, the performances were very well done, and there were some truly witty lines of dialogue! One thing this film reaped was dark humor! Much appreciated! I especially LOVED the performance done by Billy’s mother! She was the best actress in the film and unfortunately had the least screen time.

Also different from the original is the fact that Billy is identified and his origin is revealed. Again, this completely takes away the suspense and mystery of the killer like the original’s had. BUT, the flashback scenes were very well done! It really got to you and was disturbing to say the least. It also did a very good job of portraying a morbid family. Well done on that part!

Again, as I said before, there is NO suspense here! The violence and scares are pretty much laughable, but that’s why this film is fun! It’s so bad and flawed that it’s a riot and a good time! My advice: Think of it as a completely different film. In no way does this hurt the original. The 1974 version still exists. The 2006 version will go nowhere, but it will always remain a fun little piece of cheese to watch whenever anyone wants to have a good time.

Can’t Top The Original, But A Fun Slasher Movie Nonetheless.
To start off, I am a huge fan of the original “Black Christmas”, and hold it as one of the best slasher films of all time, so I was excited to see this remake – it was a bit of a letdown, but I still liked it. “Black Christmas” introduces us to serial killer Billy Lenz, who murdered his scummy, abusive mother and his stepfather, and severely injured his little sister on Christmas Eve 1991. Now years later, his childhood home has turned into a sorority, and a group of girls are celebrating the holidays in the middle of a huge snowstorm. With an unknown killer already murdering girls within the house, Billy escapes from the mental asylum and goes back home for the holidays. From there, the onslaught continues, and the sorority begins receiving bizarre phone calls, and the girls begin to die one by one.

Okay, okay – it’s obvious that this remake is never going to top the 1974 original, which many consider to be the best slasher film of all time. But, I still think this is a fun little holiday horror flick. The storyline is completely reworked from the original – the only thing they really have in common is the fact that it takes place during Christmas in a sorority house, and that someone is murdering the girls inside. Other than that, it’s much different in almost every respect, although there are some nods to the original that can be found here and there. I have to admit the script is a little messy, and it jumps around far too much. This remake gives us a lengthy history on our villain (told through flashbacks throughout the film), and jumps back and forth between this and the current-day story involving the sorority girls, diminishing any potential suspense or tension. A major plot twist is also given away within the first ten minutes of the film as well, which could have been avoided with a little writing improvement.

So, you’re probably thinking – “So is this movie all bad, or not?”. Well, while the script may not be great, the film is so entertaining you could likely dismiss it’s faults. The pacing is rapid and things happen really quickly, there’s never a dull moment (something that the original film was very different from, being much more slow-going and moody). The Christmas theme is taken advantage of here, and the set decoration within the sorority house is wonderful (lights, wreaths, decorations everywhere) – this movie reeks holiday scenery, which is nice. Like most recent slasher films, there’s a distinct amount of gore here as well, which, while it may have been over compensating for the lack of suspense, is still really nasty and uniquely executed. The murders are bloody and gross, but don’t really add or take away anything from the film. I was surprised at the amount of cleverness in this film as well – the writing isn’t perfect, but there are plenty of memorable sequences and some clever bits scattered throughout, I loved the attic finale in particular.

As far as the acting goes, it really is pretty good. Katie Cassidy leads the cast as our heroine, with Michelle Trachtenberg, Lacey Chabert, Crystal Lowe, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as her fellow sorority sisters. Andrea Martin (who played a sorority girl herself in the original movie) plays the house mother of the film, which was nice to see. The performances were really good (especially for this type of movie), I liked all of the actresses & their characters, and they perform believably. Any problems with the characters were really the fault of the script. The characters aren’t developed enough – something that should have been taken care of rather than elaborating greatly on the villain’s life history – and that’s a bit of a problem. But there are some very funny lines thrown in here (lots of dark humor can be found in this movie as well) and some clever humorous moments (which, while they entice the viewer to take the movie less seriously, provide for a funner experience).

Overall, I really enjoyed this remake of “Black Christmas”. The original film is a classic masterpiece of suspense, and this remake doesn’t come close to topping it. But it’s still an energetic, fun-spirited little Christmastime slasher movie. It has it’s fair share of problems (and had the potential to be a much better movie in terms of suspense and genuine scariness), but it will always remain a fun little horror movie to watch when the season rolls around. It’s an entertaining movie (and contains some touches that make it stand out from most), so enjoy it for what it is – just don’t expect it to be anywhere near as serious (or scary) as the original, because in that respect, the two films are very different. I may be overrating it for what it is, but I have to give it some good points for being so imaginative and entertaining. 8/10.
