She’s surrounded by friends who are all happily engaged or romantically involved and somehow, love escapes Nora — until she meets an unusual Frenchman (Melvil Poupaud) who helps her discover life beyond her self-imposed boundaries.

Parker Full of Posey: Tour de Force by Indie Queen
For the record: I am madly in love with Parker Posey. She is the bee’s knees for me and I love her in everything she does even if the films are not so good; she always delivers the goods. And in her latest, a real star vehicle for the talented actress to stretch her thespicanic muscles, she does her finest work to date.
Cast against type as a neurotic, lovely mess named Nora Wilder (such a great character name echoing classic American lit not unlike Tennessee Williams or Eugene O’Neill), a guest relations rep at a tony hotel in NYC, whose personal crises of not finding the right man to fall in love with (and more importantly for him to fall for her!0, is reaching a melting point (she has meds, has seen a shrink, gets fixed up on bad blind dates, when she goes on an online dating service and types in her choices the reply is there are none!!; etc.) where she is convinced she is cursed.
Her close friends, married-for-five-years couple Audrey and Mark Andrews (de Matteo, miles away from her late, beloved Adriana on “The Sopranos”, and Guinee, respectively) feel for her and can see their friend’s plight, as well as her well-meaning mother (Rowlands), who has re-married after the death of Nora’s beloved father. Everyone knows she’s a wonderful person and can’t figure out why all her choice in men are so terrible.
Nora also is in a rut with her rather drab job, the inevitable clock ticking inside of her fulfilling at least one of her dream life choices marriage, kids, the ideal job, etc. that it is closing in like a tight fist, suffocating her to the point she can’t even pretend anymore to enjoy a lame last-minute 4th of July part thrown by a co-worker, until she meets Julien (Poupaud), a tall, dark, and handsome Frenchman visiting The Big Apple, who shows up at the aforementioned gathering, persuading her to remain for the night, to eventually woo her much to her sudden shock and concern that this unlikely man would even look at her on the street, let alone want to kiss her.
Written and directed by Zoe Cassavettes, daughter of the iconic indie filmmaker/actor John and Ms. Rowlands, the film has the literate feel of a novella come to life and she balances the light humor with the inner struggles of the modern female in today’s trendy, go-go and be fabulous world that caters to the most plastic and ingratiating lifestyles that Nora is so desperate to shirk for a brand new start at something, ANYTHING, and wisely allows Posey to give one of her finest performances ever.
Posey usually plays with deft aplomb the atypical, strong-willed, independent, CONFIDENT, woman of today but it is a true testament to the actress’ skill at making Nora, a truly gorgeous woman whose insecurities are paramount to the point of a near breakdown that you feel her pain and it is at times poignant/pathetic (it is almost impossible to believe someone as sexy, smart and funny as Posey is could suggest the opposite; trust me I know in my own life several friends not unlike Posey’s Nora’s plight and I have nothing but empathy and cannot fathom why they feel the way they do). Credit again Cassavettes, who shares her parents’ intelligent, quirky, and universal truths of the human spirit. It’s also a circle come close for one indie queen, Rowlands, to share screen time with the current one, Posey.
A fine supporting cast however only given a few moments to sparkle include Posey’s former KICKING & SCREAMING co-star Hamilton in a funny/tragic blind date from hell and veteran character actress Somerville as a psychic who provides the film’s one true tear- inducing moment in cutting thru to Nora to make a break from her self-inflicted traumas.
While it may seem too obvious an answer for Nora’s dilemmas to be a highly unlikely rendezvous with Julien and I admit when he first appears on screen I rolled my eyes and muttered, “Oh, brother, another reason to hate the French”, but he makes his presence for the best overall.
The film again works best in a character portrayal by Posey as someone we can relate to and shudder to think, I could be this person if I allow it ; even if a trip to Paris is out of the question.
