So, the slightly amateurish “Billy” (Josh Hutcherson) decides to rob a gas station staffed by two girls – “Melinda” (Tilda Cobham-Harvey) and “Sheila” (Suki Waterhouse). The former girl is a bit strange, subdued, reticent even; her colleague far more confident with men but when the heist happens “Melinda” decides that this might be a time to assert herself with the young man. What now ensues borders on slapstick at times as she manages to take him hostage, sellotapes him to a chair (whereupon she tries to have sex with him…!) before, well – you really have to watch it. It has some quite surreal moments. Handsome Harry Shum Jr. turns up now and again as an wholly ineffective local cop and the whole thing, though pretty basic on both production and writing levels, is actually quite a quirky and watchable effort from Mike Gan that could maybe have lost ten/fifteen minutes of character and scenario establishment, but is still worth a watch.

Does that “Starts in the middle of the action the flashes back to the start” thing that crops up sometimes, which I don’t really like in movies. I think it works well for the ocassional episode of television and **sometimes** works out in mystery films, but even then, usually not. In a regular movie it mostly just feels like either they didn’t have faith that their movie could keep audiences interested until the action kicks off later on, or they just can’t figure out a decent way to start their movie off. Maybe both.

Anyway, trying to pass off Josh Hutcherson as a brutish bad boy is fuckin’ laughable and this whole thing is woefully under-explored. Can’t think of anything quite like it I’ve seen before though, so points for that.

A fantastic little thriller
Tilda Cobham-Hervey as Melinda and Suki Waterhouse as Sheila are extraordinarily in tune with what their characters call for to set Burn out on the unpredictable path it follows. Melinda is a sweetly disturbed, well intentioned, lonely girl who forces awkward moments with customers and who dips her finger in freshly brewed coffee to feel the heat she wishes to have with a man. There’s an off kilter emptiness to Melinda that Cobham-Hervey puts front and center with an appropriate misleading elegance, creating a complex and dangerous character in a standout performance. And Waterhouse steals every scene she’s in as the wise cracking Sheila who instigates and pushes boundaries with the chip on her shoulder and eye rolling attitude. The 2 are the perfect foil for Josh Hutcherson’s Billy, the would be robber who wandered into the wrong gas station. Hutcherson is effective here, perfectly charming and convincingly hot headed when his charm fails him. Burn is a fantastic little thriller that unfolds slowly to reveal a twisted series of events, and its 3 stars are integral to its success in a dialogue heavy script. I don’t know if there’s good and evil in the gas station where Melinda works, maybe just a thin line in between the 2 extremes and Burn manages to toe that line and explore the grayest areas of life, the purgatory people create for themselves…or find themselves in. It’s here where Melinda lives, on the edges of this thin line between good and evil in the seedy gas station of the highway called Paradise Pumps. And if heaven is paradise, this long night at Paradise Pumps proves that paradise is indeed lost. Burn is a great little gem, I hope people check this one out.

Gave it 10, not just to boost the rating
The movie is great, something fresh and not old recycled cliches. It has a deep sense which has to be looked at yet you can’t really fully see what’s behind that surface.

This movie is about a person who has issues with self-esteem, love and has actual intelligence to think outside the box. Other characters in the movie play perfectly for their given supporting roles to outline the protagonist.

Of course I would like more out of this plot and character development, because the ending was a bit too tight, but overall it’s a great movie. I loved that reference that the “goody two shoes” is the most mental of them all xD.

The low rating reviews are the ones who don’t really try to understand what they are watching, they are just looking at the screen and not really watching or listening. I mean if you want to have some background noise, just put on a radio or binaural beats, lmao.
