Take the already not-the-great original movie, subtract 99% of the humour, gender-swap a single character and otherwise reel out a shot for shot remake. If that sounds worthwhile to you, I guess you could 2016’s Cabin Fever a shot, but personally I’m still trying to figure out how (and more importantly why) this got made…
Great soundtrack though.
Final rating:★½: – Boring/disappointing. Avoid if possible.
My my, the most horrifying thing about this Cabin Fever remake is the vitriolic scorn poured on it by the horror hordes! It is in no way a great film, or even a particularly good one either, but to me it’s no worse than a whole ream of other gore based horrors I have been bored by since the new millennium dawned.
In my defence, I wasn’t over enamoured with the original in the first place, so it was no big stretch for me to give this one a shot. It also obviously helped me that I haven’t seen that original since the year it was released, so hazy memory and all that. What I got here was a pic full of blood and grue, sex and stereotypes, and poor acting. That is often the norm in the gore slasher genre of things…
On the plus side is the superb cinematography by Gavin Kelly and a truly head rattling musical score by Kevin Riepl, the latter of which even does a cheeky steal from Symphonie Fantastique (Hector Berlioz). And there’s the gorgeous and sexy Louise Linton playing a fantasy driven Deputy! Hoo-Hah! But I digress.
I’d never watch it again, I wouldn’t dream of recommending it to serious horror buffs, and although there’s a very good emotional pull late in the day, it’s pretty much an empty shell. But I did have fun while it was on. Sue me. 5/10
Useless remake is useless
This movie should not have been made. It does nothing new, different or even remotely better than the admittedly average original. Had it been Evil Dead-remake caliber, we would have been in for something special. But everything from the acting to the gore has taken a considerable hit with this remake as to effectively make it Cabin Fever-lite. This movie doesn’t even try to be original in its retelling of the film, as the same basic set-up (and even some of the dialogue) has been reused and recycled to ill-effect. Worst part of it all? Save for a few of the actors, the performances were atrocious. Honesty, I have seen found-footage films with better acting than what some of these no-talents pulled off. The movie was limited in its vision, and toning down the gore does a disservice to everything that was good about the original film. It’s just basic in almost every way, and really is a waste of resources. If you didn’t believe Eli Roth was a hack before, you certainly will after watching this mess. Not recommended, even if you have absolutely nothing else to watch.
The worst horror remake ever?
The original ‘Cabin Fever’ is one of my favourite movies of all time. Despite the mediocre acting, dumb characters and clichéd plot, I love it for its dark sense of humour, bizarre and surreal moments, grisly special effects and some genuinely effective and creepy scenes. And even though the sequels were awful, I still held out hope that the franchise would make a comeback. But not like this.
So the new ‘Cabin Fever’ is a shot-for shot remake that’s improves absolutely nothing from the original. The script is basically the same as the original (with some minor plot changes), so we get the same dumb characters that feel even more undeveloped and unlikeable than in the original movie due to the changes made in the plot. For example, one of the characters kills one of his infected friends in the most painful way possible, by stabbing them in the throat and then setting them on fire, when they could have easily just shot them in the head to make it quick and painless. One of the characters had also been adapted to the present day by now being an avid gamer who owns an expensive assault rifle despite having no shooting experience whatsoever, and also has amazing lines such as “Just quickscope the f*cker”. Pure gold.
The acting in this movie is atrocious. I haven’t seen acting this bad in a horror film since ‘Troll 2’. The line delivery is almost completely emotionless 80% of the time, and when the ‘actors’ aren’t talking like robots they’re screaming at the top of their lungs for minutes on end for absolutely no reason.
The film also ruins some of the elements that the original nailed. The music in the original was creepy and memorable and made the atmosphere very tense. The music in this movie is extremely loud (so much so that it drowned out some of the dialogue at various points), bland, clichéd and does nothing to build tension. The original also had some creepy and subtle scenes, while this movie isn’t scary at all due to the terrible music, terrible acting and cheap and unrealistic austral effects. This film is also very jumpscare heavy, which hurts the film more than anything.
The only positive that I have about the film is the scenery. It’s nice to look at. That’s it.
This is without a doubt in my mind one of the worst horror remakes I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen ‘The Fog’. Pretty much every aspect of this movie is handled so poorly that it’s insulting to the original movie. If you’re interested in watching this film at all then please just watch the original instead and don’t watch the trailer for this movie because it spoils pretty much everything.
