One of the best of the year
Fast and furious, very much like the mesmerizing Mesrine in its focus on a focused, driven psychopath who ultimately commits crimes for the sense of power and adrenaline they fuel. Character vignettes are sharply portrayed in short, slower-paced scenes that provide rest stops from our own adrenaline rush and illustrate the defining personality traits of the eponymous anti-hero. As one example: the seduction scene in part 2 between Carlos and the German femme terrorist Magdalena Kopp.
Quite simply, like Mesrine, great cinema with action, passion and tragedy, and one of the best movies of the year.
Don’t see anything less than the full version. DVR the showing on Sundance or wait for DVDs. The film was shot as a miniseries and there’s no reason to see it in a theater, especially if it’s the truncated version.
The evolution of an international film release.
Carlos (2010) – Directed by Olivier Assayas
A curious aspect about this film is trying to track down what the original film should be. This French/German film has had an interesting evolution since its debut in 2010. It first debuted in Cannes as a 5 ½ hour long film. When it finally debuted in Germany it was reduced to 185 minutes, with various lengths (165 mins to 319 mins), in other countries. It also was turned into a three-part miniseries for French television and IFC purchased the rights and debuted it on the Sundance Channel in October, 2010. The version I found was on Amazon Prime and it held the 165 minute UK length. I settled with that one mostly for access and cost reasons.
It tells a story about a part of our history that wasn’t well known (especially by me). It is the fictionalized story of Venezuelan terrorist Carlos the Jackal, whose reign of terror over parts of Europe and Asia took place between the early 1970s to the mid-1990s. What he did and how the authorities took care of him. The film has won many awards in both film and television (because of the mini-series release). It was ineligible for the Academy Awards, so most of the accolades came from the Golden Globes and the Emmys in America.
For myself, this film introduced me to a part of history I was unfamiliar with, which I am grateful for. I always hope to learn something from a movie, whether it’s facts, a message or just plain infotainment. It was inspired by old-Hollywood film-making techniques and with a grittiness that helps make the portrayal even more shocking. I must say though, I am glad I didn’t see the 5 ½ hour version. I felt the tightness of the shorter version I saw still had too much going on. It still is something that must be seen. It stars Edgar Ramírez as Carlos in an amazing portrayal. The greatest thing about this film is, right from the start, it tells the audience, “This film is based on true events that have been fictionalized in order to tell a more compelling story” (or something along those lines). That’s cool.
