Great movie. Just shut off your brain and enjoy it.
This is the type of Jackie Chan movie which you just need to relax and don’t think too hard about the plot. It’s a fun adventures movie that has the nostalgic feel of his past Armor of God films.
The movie itself is quirky and just overall fun. It is a nod to his past films with the overacting and weird dialogue. It reminds me of his late 80’s-90’s stuff. CZ12 is a modern version of those films.
The plot itself is quite interesting and it was hard to follow at first but as the story progressed, it made sense. All in all, the film is a modern and updated version of his past Armor of God movies. This is for today’s generation who have not seen his earlier work. Older fans might be disappointed if they expect it to be like his older work. Remember, just take off your nostalgia glasses and enjoy for what it’s worth.
Don’t waste your time or money
Where to start? I saw this movie in a theater in China with all my Chinese friends who had seen it already saying it was hysterical. This movie mixes Chinese, broken English, horrible french and other languages in a way that is very confusing.
The movie starts off with JC in some crazy rollerblade outfit that somehow manages to have enough speed on flat surfaces to out-skate gun fire? In the mix of the scene one of his partners (an attractive lady) comes out of a nice car and asks the soldiers where the bathroom is. She then proceeds to hide a set of keys (which was literally a few minutes of the movie) which then had no connection to the following sequence except for a soldier saying “where are they keys”.
So the movie goes on explaining how a long time ago, evil invaders destroyed a peaceful, advanced and harmonious society during the opium war and painting a scene of how westerns are the villains (first of many times). As the movie goes on we see how these Chinese zodiac statues that were taken are being sold in auctions by again, greedy westerners set out to humiliate china.
The action was very dull and as many mentioned the pirate scene in the middle was too drawn out. And was it a coincidence that the pirates (although later speaking multiple languages) were first speaking Japanese?
Throughout this film, I laughed maybe 3 times at most. However the audience that it was intended for (nationalistic viewers who think foreigners are not the smartest) was laughing throughout the film. For example, Coco, the Chinese in France is upset with a French guy who is breaking up with her. As JC arrives, she is throwing vases and keys at him. When JC asks whats wrong, the french guy says something along the lines of “I just came to break up with her and get my keys to give to my new girlfriend who lives with me”.
At some point in the movie JC and is band of thieves are awoken by a speech by coco’s speech on how dare they put money before a country’s pride (a theme very prevalent in this country right now, and how their children will be ashamed of them forever.)
The film ends with a skydive that somehow lasted about 5-10 minutes without pulling the parachute and still being able to catch the statute and survive?
With an old Jackie Chan retiring, he has nothing better to do than to try and appease an audience that will glorify him forever for a nationalistic “comedy” that lacked in new action, story line, and surprise.
