A splendid story and a wonderful picture
When I saw this film, about twenty years ago, I knew nothing about Bohumil Hrabal, the author of the novel, and Jiri Menzel, the director. Later I knew about the situation that many talented people went through in Czechoslovakia after “The Prague springtime” and the invasion of the country by the soviet tanks in 1968. Now I am a fan of the czech sense of humour but I still remember that evening twenty years ago when I saw what was probably my first czech film and the enormous pleasure that causes me this almost perfect movie.
A smart coming of age film focused on a young man’s sexual self-doubt
Closely Watched Trains is a film where political context is also relevant to the film, like in Ashes and Diamonds, but instead has coming of age subject matter. Filled with plenty of sexual comedy, the film focuses on Milos, who believes himself to be sexually inadequate and suffering from premature ejaculation. He looks up to his coworker at the train station, Hubicka, who Milos sees lust over and seduce women. Milos tries to kill himself and then goes around trying to find an experienced woman to have sex with to cure his problem. He ends up succeeding and feeling self-assured for the first time all movie, and consequently carries out a bold and arguably heroic task, which costs him his life. What I liked most in the film was the link made between masculinity and sexuality – Milos keeps talking about how he wants to be a man but feels like a boy due to his sexual struggles, and he talks about Hubicka as an admirable man due to his sexual feats. The historical context is also interesting, but aside from a few jokes I’m not sure how exactly the German control of Czechoslovakia is represented in Milos’ story. It’s well shot, and the basic idea is well executed, but it’s not a film that had the same depth of ideas to keep me coming back to thinking about it as some others we’ve watched.
