Seagal as the Punisher? Give me a break!
CODE OF HONOR is the very latest in a series of star action vehicles for bloated and charisma-free Steven Seagal, the former great who has been making bad film after bad film for just under twenty years now. Bizarrely, this one’s not been shot in Eastern Europe but Utah for a change, although ironically it’s even worse than Seagal’s previous Romanian and Bulgarian adventures.
The story sees Seagal as a high-tech vigilante who goes around taking down drug dealers and criminals with his sniper rifle. The police are on the case and so are various bad guys who want to take revenge for the slayings. What quickly becomes apparent is that Seagal is nothing more than a supporting player in his own movie. He gets little screen time and just one or two fight scenes which are laughably poor.
The film has plenty of cheesy CGI blood which looks even more ridiculous than that we saw in THE EXPENDABLES. Despite the violence it’s a real bore to sit through with barely any plot, a distinct lack of characterisation, and irrelevant sub-plots. Craig Sheffer and James Russo are two of the tired looking actors who show up to pick up their pay and keep their heads down. The ridiculous climax is particularly poorly handled and leaves the viewer thinking “is that it?”.
Jo! What is up? Seagal and the dude from um, um…
Although I did not know what is up or down in this very violent cool flix, I would have to say this was thus far, Seagal’s most artsy flix. The writing did not try to over- “Explain” everything, the action was seemingly real in a sense that can be real, in the real world, yet not so real world of film as we cut back and forth different variant POVs’…. but nevertheless, this was a really sweet deal, don’t ask me to write a book report on it for it was very abstract. I had no idea if that one fake, real, ex-cop military ops dude was real or bad guy Seagal was real, of if anyone in this real world could be as pretty as that one blond chick, and if the cops and reporters were skirting the issues, bordering around the rim twixt reality and the surreal, twixt normal humdrum and lunacy until we pitch and lurched back and begin our long descent into oblivion in a complete oblique POV head first at real life and death lunacy. Don’t ask me, I shan’t be able to give you an answer, all I know is one oughtn’t to ever question Seagal’s intrinsic talent at entertainment, because on that note, this lil’ flix marks a milestone that makes one daren’t never ask if Seagal is real ever again! Kickin’ ass Seagal, your best film yet! I think, but I can’t remember back to Above the Law! lol…. yeah he might have been a lil’ thinner and a lil’ younger, but to me, Seagal will always, always deliver!
