For the action seeking movie goer, watching a film taken from the pages of history, it always exciting to watch. The more accurate the film, the more interesting it becomes as those who study history remark how complicated actual people and events were. Here we have a movie based on the life and times of a very controversial figure in English History. The film is called ” Cromwell ” and relates the story of the Lord Protector of England. The role of Oliver Cromwell goes to Richard Harris who does a credible reenactment of the simple Englishman turned able soldier, Military leader, stanch politician turned Lord Protector. Although he had many obstacles in his rise to fame, the main one is Charles the Ist, King of England. (Alec Guinness) I was impressed with his role as he and his court aptly personified the Era of the Monarch. Enhansing his entourage are several other impressive actors like Robert Morley as The Earl of Manchester, Timothy Dalton, Patrick Wymark, Nigel Stock as Sir Edward Hyde and Charles Gray as The Earl of Essex. For the historian, this movie is frocked with inaccuracies, but for the lay viewer it’s brimming with army action, Calvary sequences and massive military exercises. Moreover, there are multiple layers of royal accouterments, powered wigs and costume scenes all leading to a royal execution. The total effect is stunning and entertaining. For audiences this movie is worth watching if for nothing else than to see a famed Irishman, playing a detested English tyrant. ****
