Really Dark Blue.
Dark Blue (2002): Dir: Ron Shelton / Cast: Kurt Russell, Ving Rhames, Scott Speedman, Lolita Davidovich, Brendan Gleeson: Insightful and intelligent film about police corruption. The film opens with a reference to the Rodney King beating as a young rookie cop played by Scott Speedman is questioned regarding foul police conduct. Kurt Russell clears him leaving all satisfied accept Ving Rhames. Effective setup leading to focusing upon motives. Several people are shot during a convenient store robbery and director Ron Shelton bypasses a routine investigation for a character study. He previously made Tin Cup and Play It to the Bone but this is one of his greatest achievements. It is a film that not only deals with the subject of corrupt law, but it also demonstrates how sin can decay one’s life from every angle. Russell is fantastic and full of sarcasm as a corrupt cop who realizes the consequences of his actions being told to burn in hell over his biggest mishap. Rhames is superb as he struggles to reveal the corruption as well as deal with private affairs. Speedman is fine as a cop searching for redemption. Lolita Davidovich plays Russell’s wife who is on the verge of leaving him. Brendan Gleeson plays the commander who sets up a stage of events to bring this all out into the open. Great film about righting wrongs even though the wounds may not heal. Score: 10 / 10
