This was a poor implementation of a fascinating concept, thanks in great part to Scott Eastwood’s inability to portray a complex character, and an ultimately shallow script.
The menacing Ezra needed to be fleshed out substantially more, and the signals of his true connection to Jackson were clumsily handled and incorrectly paced.
It’s so sad to have wasted an opportunity to create a haunting psychological western. It could have been really, really good.
Still, you’ll be amazed at how much Scott Eastwood can look like his father. He’s near identical in some shots.
Who would’ve thought that out of the two Westerns I watched this week, the one starring Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton would be the worse movie.
_Diablo_ is far from perfect, and it slumps pretty heavily in the middle. But the opening scene and entire third act had me totally engrossed.
The supporting cast of _Diablo_ are all pretty on point. Particularly Walton Goggins. Even Danny Glover who is notorious for phoning it in these days does a good job. Unfortunately, Scott Eastwood in the lead role is abysmal. So poor in fact that it was all that held me back from giving _Diablo_ a “Fresh” rating.
_Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._
Better Than the Rating Says
When the 7.2 rating from San Diego Film Festival started rapidly dropping towards 5.0 after the premiere, I had little to no expectations of the film. However, it turns out it might just be the onslaught of those that thought it’ll be a computer game adaptation and then star struck girls that went to see it because they saw Scott Eastwood in some chick-flick or other, and after watching the film, I understand what they had against it.
The start of the film is what you’d expect from a well-crafted, but altogether unmemorable Western – lonesome hero, pretty landscape shots, crossing the wilderness, fight for survival and pretty despicable antagonist. By the way, Walton Goggins was made just for such roles. However, somewhere halfway you realize you’re not seeing what you think you’re seeing and that’s refreshing. Scott Eastwood does well looking the average cowboy hero, but he’s believable. The length of the film is 90 minutes, which is just succinct enough to keep you entertained throughout.
Nice try movie but I’m not buying this
I love when a movie with a genetic plot surprise me with a cool twist but in this case with Diablo screw the plot twist cause there nothing wrong with being a genetic movie as long as it entertaining and don’t hurt your brain. At the time Diablo is the first western movie with Scott Eastwood son of the legendary Clint Eastwood so I know alot of people hope this movie will mark the new badass cowboy in town but it turn out that Scott only got some part of his dad face and none of his dad charistma.Every single person Scott met along the road fear him like he is the reincarnation of Satan or something when they got plenty of chance to kill him right from the get-go so when the movie hit it climax with a shoot-out I can only rolling my eyes while watching Scott acting like a maniac that too good for his own good until the movie end
