Less annoying than the first movie but still problematic
This being a sequel to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated remake from 2021 it doesn’t feel much better. In this Disney+ animated adaptation of the Rodrick Rules book, it still has most of the same problems.
While this movie does make it to the hour runtime unlike the first movie it still fails to use parts of the source material and some of which were even changed like when Greg tells his parents why the lock isn’t on the door and somehow the beginning of the film feels misplaced for what should happen in the middle of the film with their parents telling them they’re going on a trip. After they get home Greg and Rodrick end up at their grandfather’s not because their grounded but all because their parents say so. This feels more like your average brother-bond movie than what the book and even the 2011 live action adaptation had accomplished. Also there’s barely any scenes that take place at certain locations like Westmore Middle School, the hotel Greg and Rodrick’s parents stay at, and the rollerskating rink Greg meets his friends at. The jokes are also subpar compared to the live action adaptation, while the jokes are inoffensive I never really laughed during this movie like in the 2011 film which was way funnier.
When talking about the characters, Rodrick is more of an unnecessary scumbag in this movie and Greg is just being tortured by his actions. Sure they eventually have a scene near the end where Rodrick feels a little bad but only because he saw the pictures in his diary, not because of the fact he locked Greg in the basement, lied about his science project, cheated with the mom bucks, and encouraged Greg to be a terrible influence without any real comeuppance other than him being grounded only to get back into the talent show the next day. Some of this would’ve worked great and would’ve tied together with the source material of his book counterpart if it was just handled properly on his character. This is once again forgetting who these characters are. With Greg Heffley, he does nothing wrong other than a couple of mild insults on his best friend Rowley. He’s getting consequences only for things Rodrick does because his character is done wrong. And because Rodrick’s older friends get Greg to take his place since he’s grounded, they don’t think about how Rowley feels about his magic act by replacing Greg which Greg would’ve been fine not participating in but with someone else without even him knowing before hand which that whole thing gets pushed away like it never mattered, even Greg realizes this is wrong to do. And of course where’s Holly, Chirag, and Fregley? I know these characters had more of a role in The Last Straw book which the previous adaptation of this film used but it’s like they just don’t exist here. The only characters I was fine with were the parents Frank Heffley and Susan Heffley, Manny Heffley, and Greg’s grandfather. It was nice to add something to the grandfather than before I will admit, but too many characters feel forgotten.
The animation is no better than the first film. It still uses those same uncanny CG models they could’ve spent this entire year polishing but they chose to do absolutely nothing with them and the lighting still feels unfinished in most shots, mostly in dark areas like Greg’s basement just feel too 2000’s direct-to-video quality. And once again I am aware this is “straight-to-streaming” but straight-to-streaming was mostly invented because of the pandemic we’re in, not so that film studios can get lazier because they don’t have to worry about box office bombs. But also the elephant in the room, Greg’s 2D diary segments. Look if you’re going to make an animated adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid you can’t have it both ways. This creates a plot hole with Greg being able to draw everything exactly the way his world actually looks and it just doesn’t make any sense, his diary doodles had this type of character design for a reason.
Not everything about this movie is bad. The pacing was definitely better, there is some type of development between the brotherly relationship with Greg and Rodrick even though it’s flawed, Rowley isn’t also unlikable in any kind of way, and I did mention how this movie isn’t too short and that Grandfather Heffley was actually not a bad idea to expand on when the two spend the night with him. I found this movie a lot less annoying than its predecessor so it’s just a tad better than the first movie so I’ll give this one a 5/10. But if Disney is planning to adapt every DOAWK book into a feature length movie they still really need improvement. There’s a lot of things that need to be improved if this is where they’re going with it. As much as I would doubt they’ll get better I hope the next film does better than this, there’s room for potential if they just tried hard enough.
I had high hopes as the original diary of a wimpy kid: rodrick rules is one of my favorite movies. But this animation disaster didn’t live up to the hype of the original movie. The plot was all over the place and to me didn’t make sense. The movie seemed rushed and unplanned. I didn’t find any of the “jokes” funny nor did half of them make sense. I have this two stars because the animation style it’s self was decent but the movie was bad. I would not watch again or recommend to anyone seeking a diary of a wimpy kid movie. This would be the last on my list of options. Hope they can redeem themselves for the next movie (if there will be one).
