Reviews:

Boris gives us his all
AIP decided to try cashing in on Lovecraft rather than Poe this time around. What we get is an above average movie that is hampered by its budget.

Nick Adams plays Stephen Reinhart who arrives in the small english town of Arkham. When he tries various means to travel to the Witley estate he is rebuffed by the townsfolk and has to walk. We’re treated to some decent matte shots of a desolate countryside.

Arriving at the estate the young man is met by Nahum Witley (Boris Karloff). He is pointedly told to leave.Sticking to his guns Steve informs the man that he was invited by Mrs Witley.Of course Susan (Witley’s daughter) rushes down to clear up some confusion.

Here we learn that there are some weird goings on involving everyone at the house. A maid has disappeared, weird screams are heard at night and Mrs Witley hides behind curtains.A real miasma lurks in this house. Nahum has a strange secret in the basement that seems to be killing everyone who comes in contact with it.

Rather than go further into the plot which is really basic there are a few things that lift this above your standard haunted (for lack of a better word) house story. This movie just reeks with atmosphere. It is very opressive and claustrophobic. The sets are wonderful and nicely done on the cheap.Boris Karloff gives his usual wonderful performance. Nick Adams actually holds his own here.

On the downside the special effects are very limited due to the budget. A minor quibble.Patrick Magee shows up for a role that will leave you scratching your head wondering what that was all about.

Definitely worth a look if you catch it on AMC or find the dvd cheaply.

Early Lovecraft Adaptation Hits a High Mark
Stephen Reinhart (Nick Adams) travels to a remote English village to visit his girlfriend Susan Whitley (Suzan Farmer). From the moment he arrives in the village, it is clear that no one will speak of the Whitleys or even give him directions to the Whitley estate. Susan is happy to see him when he finally makes it there but her father Nahum (Boris Karloff) tells him he must leave immediately.

One of the earlier H. P. Lovecraft adaptations, I am unclear how close to the original story this comes, but my understanding is that it is not too far removed considering other literature to film adaptations. Stuart Gordon, a master Lovecraft adapter, has strayed farther than this. And other pictures from this production company (American International Pictures) have taken Poe’s short tales and completely bowdlerized them. The biggest obvious change is the surname becoming Whitley rather than Gardner. So, in comparison, this is pretty decent. (The most basic aspect, a meteorite that leads to a house’s curse, is present.)

Lovecraft scholar Don G. Smith claims that the “blasted heath doesn’t live up to Lovecraft’s description” and asserts that overall the film does not successfully capture Lovecraft’s intent to “play… with the idea of an alien life form completely different from anything humans can imagine”. Smith considers director Daniel Haller’s work to be an imitation of Roger Corman’s Poe films. Clearly there is some derivative appearance to Corman’s Poe, but this should hardly be surprising as both are 1960s American International films, and Haller had done the art design for Corman — the look would be very similar. If anything, Smith should be impressed that Lovecraft was chosen at all and modified respectfully.

I was really impressed with this film in almost every way. The acting, the special effects (1960s radiation) and the suspense-filled plot kept me hooked like a junkie on horse. Boris Karloff makes a good showing, but does not steal the scene from either of the two leads. The balance is poetry in motion.

I suppose the influence of this film must be great. Of course, there is the Lovecraft aspect that must have opened the door for other film adaptations. (Both “The Blob” and “The Curse” with Wil Wheaton are said to be variations of the same story, although I am doubtful of the former.) And there is a scene where the female lead is attacked by a vine in the greenhouse… this just screamed “Evil Dead” to me. And for anyone who has played the computer game “Alone in the Dark”, the atmosphere seemed similar here, too.

I wish I could go on, but I do not have the insight to really get to the heart of how wondrous this film was. I would even go so far to say it makes some of the Vincent Price-starring Poe features look weak in comparison. I promise you this, though… unless you have a strong dislike for older films, this one will really strike you in your heart and you will be in love.

(Perhaps best of all, a small cameo from Patrick Magee as the village doctor.)

Sadly, when Scream Factory released the film on Blu-ray, they offered no special features other than a trailer. I understand many of the stars are old or dead, but perhaps Don Smith would have liked to provide a commentary track…
