Excellent telling of 3 stories relating to interactions on the web.
I’m going to keep this a simple review, there’s plenty of longer ones if you want that. I went to this movie with zero expectations. I wanted to see a movie today and this just happened to be 1 of the 4 playing at my small theater. The movie was very well done. All 3 stories were intriguing and believable. Many sad stories such as these are often over-dramatized and make me hate them. However, I found this one to hit the drama level perfectly. They make you feel for the characters and believe their actions (to which I’ll say all of the actors did an AMAZING job, particularly the kids).
I almost wish I could see a feature-length movie of 2 of the 3 stories in this. Those being the bullied kid and the other of cyber sex ring. Those 2 were definitely hit their mark. I thought the 3rd, with the couple who lost their money to identity theft, was good as well…but perhaps not to the same level as the others. To be fair though, the other 2 might just have been more intriguing of a topic for me.
Just a quick comment on the Rating: Personally, I think this movie should have been rated PG-13. There was only light violence (not gloritized, either) and very brief, tasteful nudity. All while 2 of the stories were relating to very real scenarios related to kids. Meh, maybe I’m just being silly thinking kids can handle movies about topics they clearly live through.
Fascinating and powerful look into the negative effects of today’s reliance of social media and the privacy we think the internet provides us.
First off, I don’t write many reviews but Disconnect was a truly powerful movie that I decided this is one deserves a good review .
Jason Bateman kicks up this role to another notch and branches off from his usually funny and comedic self. I truly think it is his best performance thus far. In Disconnect he plays Rich Boyd , the father of a son who is bullied at school and on his FB page is harassed by typical teenage boys looking to humiliate the “different” and talented young Ben Boyd. He is made to think that he has a young girl who is interested in him and really is being fooled by two younger boys who think it’s funny to mess around with him but goes tragically wrong and the young Ben tries to hang himself. This is a truly disturbing and real problem today , especially in today’s world of bullying and cyber bullying which is a major problem in our society today.
Then you have a couple who has their identity stolen and their whole life is turned upside down by this all to often act that effects thousands of people in our country everyday. The mental anguish this brings to the two Hulls after losing their child tears them apart
Then you have Kyle (Max Theriot from Bates Motel) who does and excellent job and is a very talented young actor who plays a young man who is on a porn site and is being used illegally for the pleasure of other men and women. He is approached by a reporter (risborough) who wants to tell his story and use him for a piece at a local television station but ultimately has feelings for Kyle and winds up in trouble and cornered by the FBI because of her “relationship ” and gifting the boy.
That is just a brief synopsis of the 3 different stories in Disconnect. Where the movie is truly interesting is how these peoples life intersect and form a web which ultimately leads them on different paths of their own destruction in each ones lives. The Director does a FANTASTIC job of making this film and putting it together where it comes together so powerfully and well and so frighteningly true to the internet age that we live in today. Jason Bateman I’ll say again is absolutely amazing in it and if you are a person who likes a good drama then this movie is definitely for you but I would ABSOLUTELY tell anybody to see this film. Don’t be fooled though as Disconnect does not have a happy ending and the director leaves you wondering for yourself .. Just how safe are you on your computers and using today’s technology and also what are you young people up to on these social media sites as well as the creepy work of online chat and child pornography that goes on in this “Connected” world we live in.. Absolutely see this movie and see for yourself
