Pleasant Surprise
I actually saw it because of its interesting cast and had low expectations because it seemed just like not my cup of tea but it turned out to be a fun ride. The story is interesting, it flows beautifully and unexpectedly, and tackles a beautiful topic. It has some nicely shot thrilling action scenes, it also gets emotional sometimes. All in all, it’s very good and highly enjoyable but don’t see it if you’re looking for a typical sci-fi movie.
All PTSD and no aliens…
When I sat down to watch the 2021 movie “Encounter” from writers Joe Barton and Michael Pearce, I must admit that I figured that I would be in for a movie with aliens in it. Especially since it is what the movie’s synopsis heavily hinted at.And sure, I hadn’t even heard about “Encounter” prior to sitting down to watch it, so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into here, and thus director Michael Pearce had every opportunity to impress and bedazzle me.
Now, it totally came as a surprise to me that this movie was about a man suffering from PTSD and that it wasn’t actually a movie about aliens. So talk about being in for something quite different than what sitting down and expecting.
The storyline simply fell short of entertaining me, so this movie was somewhat of a drag for me to sit through, though I managed to endure it to the end, hoping that there would be some leverage behind the claims of aliens spewed by Malik Khan (played by Riz Ahmed). And the slow pacing of the narrative was just making it all the more difficult to sit through or get much of any enjoyment from.
The character gallery in the movie was not particularly great, though I will say that Riz Ahmed did put on a great performance. I also sat down to watch “Encounter” on the fact that the movie had Octavia Spencer on the cast list, but she was not actually in the movie all that much.
“Encounter” is not a movie that I would recommend you rush out to watch. And if you do, keep in mind that this movie is about a man suffering from PTSD and his mental breakdown, it is not about aliens in any way, aside from it being his delusions.
I am rating “Encounter” a three out of ten stars, as this movie was a swing and a miss and didn’t entertain me. And truth be told, when you sit down and expect aliens then a psychological drama just doesn’t cut it.
