**Disneyland to Disasterland.**
The first thing is it is a different film. Might not be fully a fresh concept, but a rare kind. A bunch of wonderful characters and cast, this is somewhat entertaining. Takes place in the backdrop of Disneyland, Florida. Focused on a small family with two little kids having a nice time in the theme park. The story centres mainly on the father, who unable to resist the attraction towards two young French girls seen everywhere he goes. Which leads him to make mistakes being a father. Moreover, strange and unrecognisable events jeopardises the unity of his family.
A bit of fantasy and reality, the film has a style. I thought it was just a flow that’s taking it to the other end of the film, but the twist caught me by surprise. Nothing like a mind blowing, but for this kind of small flick, it was good enough. I don’t think in any way the film offends the Disney park and Disney fans. Though the Disney did a fine job ignoring it rather than creating more publicity for the film by suing. It was just a possibility of life event which can take place anywhere, anytime. So, that’s how it came into the life with this children’s favourite theme park. Despite where it sets in, the film is for the adults. I think it is worth a try without any expectation.
**Conceptually**, this had a lot going for it. But the actual product is a fucking disaster. _Escape from Tomorrow_ fails in basically every way it possibly could.
_Final rating:★ – Of no value. Avoid at all costs._
An interesting and daring concept to pull off – but felt hollow and (kind of) empty.
To start this review off, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. It was absolutely daring, interesting, and was absolutely surreal and impressive for what it accomplished. Let’s just get that out of the way first. However, the movie (to me) felt like a mixed bag that could have had more substance to it. I have had plenty of questions after the film that weren’t answered subtly in the film or just in general.
Here’s the thing, I can enjoy movies that are random just to be random, but the randomness has to have a purpose, otherwise, it doesn’t mean anything at all. This was just a big problem for me with the whole film, it lacked substance and felt empty and hollow. Just to clarify, I don’t expect the answers to be spoon fed to me, but it would’ve been nice to give clues that led up to the events that had happened, and interpret from there.
Another problem that I have had was how the characters felt really two-dimensional and didn’t do much for me, as they were basic and simplistic. Another complaint that I have had was the editing, and is another big one. The editing was, to be quite frank, absolutely shoddy and not good. It seemed rushed, looked extremely lazy and looked really bad, in general, especially in a bunch of the scenes where the characters are filmed behind a green screen with footage playing behind the characters, with terrible special effects. Don’t get me wrong, the special effects and editing has it’s fair share of being good and bad, but it was mostly bad during the 2nd act, and some in the 1st and 3rd act. There was most likely a reason for this because they probably had to rush it out to the public and try not to get in legal trouble, which is what I believe. This would hopefully be the case, as this sounds pretty reasonable.
The least I can say is that I was absolutely entertained and intrigued during the whole film. Otherwise, I would recommend this to people who casually watch movies who don’t care for interpreting and questioning a film so much. In other words, people who just sit and relax and just enjoy the movie.
Imperfect and not for everyone, but I quite liked it
The infamous film that was shot almost entirely at Disneyworld. The thought was, when it opened at Sundance in January, that Disney would sue it out of existence, that maybe you’d only ever be able to see it if it popped up online at some point. In the end, though, Disney just decided to ignore it (some have pointed out that the company’s infamous litigiousness is more a thing of the past). So the next question has to be, does this actually work as a film, or is it just a curio? In my opinion, it very much is a curio, but not just because of the circumstances of its production. It is, in fact, an extremely weird film. It’s far from perfect, but, really, it’s so weirdly entertaining that I don’t really care. The one thing I really love about it is the black and white cinematography – it’s really gorgeous and eerie. The film has a hypnotic quality. It’s well worth checking out.
