Mars has been occupied by humans for some time and they have set up mining facilities. The mining activities on Mars have unleashed the spirits of alien beings who gradually possess the bodies of the workers. Another positive review
A team of future cops take a bullet train to a Marsian colony to retrieve a murderer played by Ice Cube. Upon arrival they’re attacked by colonists possessed by the Ghosts of Mars. John Carpenter’s penultimate theatrical feature to date is easily one of his best, considering the odds against it. The film borrows from Total Recall, The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13, but still looks fresh and original. The pace is steady and the mood consistent. The electronic/metal score recorded by Carpenter and Anthrax, while being uncharacteristically modern, still is very much signature Carpenter. The glorious Panavision cinematography is fresh just like it was in the 80s. The (then) young stars Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Jason Statham and Clea DuVall fit their roles perfectly, most notably Henstridge, who effortlessly portrays a woman in command and *not* a tough chick with a chip on her shoulder. The seasoned actresses Pam Grier and Joanna Cassidy add a punch here and there. Ghosts of Mars leans closer to Escape from LA on the fun meter, but retains the quality and edginess of The Thing. A good movie.
Will be a cult classic in time
Ghosts Of Mars is not John Carpenter’s best film however it has to be one of his most visually interesting and action packed. The basic idea is much like Carpenter’s earlier film Assault On Pericent 13 however it has some new twists. In the future Mars is a colony and humans are living and mining there. A group of cops are sent out to a mining town to transport a criminal back to the city. The first hour of this movie is all about building the characters and the atmosphere. Most of the characters are not very well developed besides Ice Cube and Jason Statham characters and Nastaha Henstridge is just hot and fun to watch as the leader. After some build up the movie goes from creepy outer space thriller to good old classic hard hitting action with a cool mean heavy metal soundtrack. The last half of this movie never lets up and the ending while isn’t original it works very well. If your looking for something deep about space and ghosts look elsewhere, the title is Ghosts Of Mars this movie isn’t to be taken seriously. All you need to know is the story takes place on Mars, there are ghosts and plenty of Carpenter action and fun.
