Synopsis

Watch: Grey Gardens 2009 123movies, Full Movie Online – In 1973, documentary filmmaking brothers Albert Maysles and David Maysles decide to change the focus of their latest project from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to her aunt and older cousin, mother and daughter Edith Bouvier Beale – called Big Edie – and Edith ‘Little Edie’ Bouvier Beale, who were found living in squalor and isolation in the longtime family mansion, Grey Gardens, in East Hampton, New York. Through flashbacks starting in 1936, the path mother and daughter take from their socialite past to the time that the Mayles brothers show their completed film is shown. Big Edie’s husband/Little Edie’s father, Phelan Beale, controlled the family money, which included providing singing lessons to Big Edie with musician Gould Strong, with who she had more than a musical interest. Big Edie saw herself as a singer, first and foremost. Mother and father also controlled Little Edie’s life, they who wanted her to stay at Grey Gardens rather than pursue her dream of becoming a professional dancer and actress in New York City. Phelan and Big Edie’s eventual divorce, Little Edie’s ill-fated relationship with Cap Krug in New York City, Big Edie’s failing health, the pressure Little Edie faced to care for her mother, and a dwindling trust, which is used to maintain a life at Grey Gardens, slowly transform the lives of mother and daughter over the four decades. Mother and daughter agree to be the subjects of the documentary film in an effort to regain their past careers and glories, which never really materialized in their younger days..
Plot: Based on the life stories of the eccentric aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis raised as Park Avenue débutantes but who withdrew from New York society, taking shelter at their Long Island summer home, “Grey Gardens.” As their wealth and contact with the outside world dwindled, so did their grasp on reality.

Reviews:

I just wish little Edie could have seen this film…
Not sure why it took me so long to view this film (I rarely watch made-for-cable-television films, so that explains that.) I’ve seen the documentary a number of times and always came away from it wishing I would have had the opportunity to meet the Edies and, particularly, little Edie. I can’t explain it, but there’s just something so marvelously endearing about her. She should have been a “somebody” other than just being Jackie O.’s cousin.

Watching the 1975 Maysles record of the closing days of Grey Gardens always sets me to thinking, perhaps too much, about what I saw play out between my own deceased mother and grandmother. It always takes me a couple of days to shake that film loose.

I watched the documentary, again, three days ago. Tonight I watched the film–is there a genre known as augmented documentary? The augmented documentary floored me. In particular, Barrymore’s performance is stunning. She IS little Edie! I know the documentary very well, all the “classic” lines; and, Barrymore’s delivery of them was like…well, watching little Edie in the documentary. Yet, seeing more of the Beales’ past played out in rich detail connected so many dots for me (e.g. the very special gift given to Edith by Krug that figures prominently at the film’s end.)

At the film’s end, I was sorely missing my mother. She was the little Edie in my life; and, she would have loved this film. My grandmother, or big Edie, would have loved it, too. Thankfully, furniture covered with plastic and strict rules about animals in the house (never cats, and only the occasional small dog not allowed in bedrooms) kept the living arrangement tidy; but, the big Edie and little Edie dynamic was all there. So much laughter, so many tears, so much love and so much dislike. This film captured it all for me. Perhaps, to really appreciate it, one needs to have lived it to a certain degree. If one hasn’t, I can see where the film might come across less than excellent.

9/10 stars from me and only because the film didn’t incorporate “The Marble Faun” eating corn with big Edie; and, I missed little Edit remarking on her “revolutionary” dress for the day.

Excellent portrayals
Noticing the accents of Drew and Jeanne: excellent, and within close approximation of each other. I feel that they capture the local patois of that time and place. Jeanne did an excellent Jackie portrayal. I liked watching Drew sing and dance near the end, especially in that smashing red outfit. Jessica phenomenal as Big Edie, and the aging makeup and hair/wig treatments are just fantastic. All of their mannerisms are to the point. Ken Howard great, too. I am remembering him as Thomas Jefferson in “1776” (with that flaming red hair, playing the violin against the performance of Blythe Danner).

The filth and garbage of the Edies’ estate were prime props in this movie. I could almost smell the obnoxious odors. As a Stanislavsky-trained actress, I can always conjure up that type of sense memory for the stage. I hope that all of these actors win top awards for their performances. Now if only I were as famous as they are.

As actors, I can imagine trying to keep a straight face throughout these performances. I know that it is for the good of the script, and certainly to increase the well-roundedness and decrease the typecasting of the actors. Some of the lines are quite funny, and Big Edie as an old woman singing in her bed is just hilarious as well as filled with heartbreaking pathos. Drew as younger Little Edie looking at her balding head in the mirror is also heartbreaking. The scarves she wears later are quite ingenious, and certainly the red one at the one is the most fantastic one of all.

Drew, you have come a long way since “ET”. I loved you in “Ever After”, etc. Keep on making movies. I have studied the histories of your ancestors, especially John, Lionel and Ethel — those famous siblings (and you look a lot like them). I think you are doing a great job, especially in this movie where you sneeringly rub it in to “Jack-A-Leen” about how you could have been First Lady, married to Joe Jr.

15/10.
