Harrowing truth
A story of the Korean comfort women and their struggles to find justice in the Japanese courts in the 1990s. This ripped-from-the-headlines tale is constructed to shine a light on an episode of history shameful to both Korea (the victim) and Japan (the perpetrator) through close realism and heavy emotion. All of the expected Korean melodrama is present here, from hand-wringing to chest-thumping, to breakdowns and death, all played out with a maximum of emotion. It’s a tough watch because of the darkness of the material, but as a true story it demands to be told.
