Reviews:

Not one of the Maestro’s masterworks, but very good nonetheless
I Vitelloni was Federico Fellini’s third film, and it shows very well how he was maturing in his style, and likewise very well how he was not yet fully mature. His next film would be La Strada, one of the world’s great films. I Vitelloni, although many who have had the chance to see it champion it as one of his best, is a tier down from La Strada and his other melodramatic masterpiece, Nights of Cabiria (his other masterpieces, IMO, are La Dolce Vita, 8 ½, and Amarcord of those I’ve seen, which are all of the ones that are generally considered to be great; I’d also make a case for And the Ship Sails On). The film’s flaws are mostly in the script: it is sloppy. There are several great scenes, a couple of the best, especially in a visual aspect, that Fellini ever created, but more often the actions of the characters are difficult to understand. The characters themselves aren’t all that well defined – in a scene that has since become common, the five title characters are introduced to us by a narrator, who tells us certain primary traits for each of them. Sadly, we only learn a bit more about most of them. What really harms the film, though, is the fact that a few of these main characters are difficult to distinguish from one another. To make things worse, as time moves on in the film, the characters constantly change the style of their facial hair!

The film is quite episodic, which is actually Fellini’s most common way of going about it, but most of the events in his better films seem to bear more weight on the emotions of the films. I Vitelloni is still a very good film, but, given its unavailability, it’s unnecessary to knock yourself down searching it out. Perhaps Criterion will release it on DVD soon. Maybe, if it has some good extras, I’ll purchase it. 8/10.

an early Fellini classic
I Vitelloni, or the Spivs as it translates (whatever it means I don’t really know), will be hard to find for most viewers of Fellini’s films since it’s out of print (I saw it through a friend who got it on eBay). None the less it is worth the money and time to find this film, and it has a cast of characters that are near unforgettable.

Fellini paints a portrait of a small village in Italy, where some young men are either unemployed or just aimless, and the film unfolds each character’s changes (or lack thereof) in a semi-coming of age structure. A few characters of note: One of them, Fausto (Franco Frabrizi), is the man guy in the Spivs, a lady’s man who gets the Sandra (Leonora Ruffo) the girl he loves pregnant, and they have the kid and get married, but his eyes still wander to others, in particular in the shop he gets a job in through his father in law.

Another character, Leopoldo (Leopoldo Trieste), is a writer, still living with his difficult mother and family (actually, all of these guys live with their families due to their incomes, even Fausto) and still wants to meet a playwright he’s looked up to his whole life despite being a somewhat success for himself. And another character, Moraldo (Franco Interlenghi), is the most intelligent, and inward of the group, who has more of a mind of his own than his friends. These guys are in this village, and it appears from the start that they live in the village, and may very well stay there for the rest of their lives like their elders.

I Vitelloni seems like an important step in what became Fellini’s career, and though it lacks the “Fellini-esque” style that he later trademarked in his classics La Dolce Vita, (his best) 8 1/2, and Amarcord, it doesn’t suffer from it – a lot of times it felt like Fellini was showing a style that would further flourish even though it didn’t contain the sensational imagery. Like in the films that later took inspiration from this (director Martin Scorsese lists it as a main influence on his masterpiece Mean Streets), Fellini shows his characters for being brutally human, and for that he adds some fine comedic moments in with the drama.

For instance, Fausto and his friends go looking in desperation for Sandra and the baby after she discovered his adultery and on the way during their search there’s a hilarious joke involving some workers they pass by on the road. Little moments like that, among others, are what make Fellini and this film unique, and absolutely in the director’s top tier.
