Death To All Fascists!!!
If…is a tale of a group of youths driven to a just revolution by a group of fascists and the drones they are attempting to shape in their own image. It’s a film that was influenced by Jean Vigo’s previous Zero De Conduite ,and would go on to influence Alan Parker’s later film Scum. All of which tell similar stories about boarding school experiences.
In this film, we focus on the three musketeers of Travis, Johnny and Knightley, as they try to survive their time at an upper class boys school in England.
The administration is staffed by a number of fascistic sexual predators who would not be out of place is Pasolini’s Sado.
They attempt to mold the young minds of the students with cold hearts, violence, molestation, and an all around overly strict regiment.
Most of the boys either conform to the model, or become victims of it…however, a few stand out as true rebels…our three musketeers being examples of this later group.
Travis is influenced by African rebels fighting against the systematic oppression of their colonizers.
He both empathizes with their plight, and is inspired by their resistance.
And he, in turn, influences his two best friends Johnny and Knightley in this regard.
Together, they wage a subtle rebellion daily, which really messes with the heads of their domineering overseers- who try to whip them into shape by any means necessary…via tactics which include insults, cold showers and prolonged beatings.
This reaction is both to punish the 3 older boys, and to instill fear into the hearts of the younger students, who look up to their older, more rebellious counterparts.
The whole system seems to be designed to shape these young minds into “good soldiers”, ready and willing to accept being conscripted, and sent off to fight in Britain’s unjust external wars of oppression and imperialism.
But this group of rebels, alongside their female comrade, are having none of it.
They are ready to fight back against the system. Even if it means certain death…
In the end, we are left with the question…what if those of just hearts, and true courage, fought back against the forces of fascism that permeate modern day society…to destroy them by any means necessary?
Just what might the world look like in it’s wake?
An absolute masterpiece.
I recommend watching the Criterion version, which has additional scenes, once removed, incorporated back into the film, which provide for a larger context.
