This was very good, but I like the 1970 original London concept album better
I thought this was an interesting take on JCS in a concert setting (and I remember it from the original version when I was a kid), but people should definitely listen to the original 1970 London concept album and watch the 1973 movie as well (Yvonne Elliman was great as Mary).

The screaming audience covered the flow
Practically everyone has seen a version of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR – from the original 1970 Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice opera that was a Broadway hit and became a film in 1973. Now that rock ops has been transformed into a live concert version for television and the results are a mixed bag of both good and bad. Energy to burn, this production is more about noise than it is about drama and music and the chief reason for that is the constant explosive screams and applause form the on stage audience seated in bleachers to the side of the actors.

Lots of shaved and tattooed heads and wild hair on the huge cast, but some of them stand out w=for their performances. Sara Bareilles is excellent as Mary Magdalene, Brandon Victor Dixon is a credible and well-vocalized Judas, Norm Lewis has the finest bass voice as Caiaphas, and John Legend struggles with the role of Jesus – vocally fine by not a credible character. For some reason the directors enlisted Alice Cooper to enact Herod (so much screaming from the on stage audience to really hear him), and a meandering orchestra in costume (strings are not audible for the noise).

It is an event and worth sitting through if only to appreciate a landmark work approaching its fiftieth anniversary. Best with volume turned down – not for the cast but for the out of control onstage audience.
