Watch: Kiss Me, Stupid 1964 123movies, Full Movie Online – Dino, the charming and lecherous Las Vegas singer, stops for gas on his way to Hollywood in Climax, Nevada. The oily gas station attendant is Barney Millsap, a would-be lyricist who writes pop songs with Orville Spooner, the local piano teacher. To entertain Dino, Barney contacts the village tart, Polly, employing her to pretend to be Orville’s wife, Zelda, for a night. She doesn’t like Dino, but does love being Orville’s surrogate wife. Dino goes to a bar, where he meets the real Zelda, and they spend the night together while Polly spends it with Orville..
Plot: While traveling home from Vegas, an amorous lounge singer named Dino gets conned by a local mechanic/songwriter into staying in town for the night. Jealous piano teacher Orville Spooner (Ray Walston) sends his beautiful wife, Zelda (Felicia Farr), away for the night while he tries to sell a song to a famous nightclub singer Dino (Dean Martin), who is stranded in town. The Catholic Legion of Decency strongly objected to the completed film and it was condemned, the second film to get such an honor — the first being “Baby Doll” in 1956. One can easily see why, as while there is no nudity, there is plenty of humor revolving around prostitution, adultery and and Dean Martin being a “sex maniac”.
A. H. Weiler of the New York Times called the film “pitifully unfunny” and “obvious, plodding, short on laughs and performances and long on vulgarity.” This seems unfair. While it is not among Billy Wilder’s best work, even Wilder’s average films are better than many other people’s greatest attempts. I can only say now (roughly fifty years after the film debuted) that while it was not perfect, it had its moments and was quite bold in its own way.
Unpleasant characters played by miscast actors in an improbable story make for painful viewing
Not every old movie is a classic. Case in point KISS ME, STUPID. This overdone B&W comedy directed by Billy Wilder is an aborted effort. The actors are entirely miscast including, oddly enough, Dean Martin who plays a Las Vegas lounge singer. Ray Walston is not a leading man and this movie painfully proves it. Cliff Osmond is a terribly hammy actor and Kim Novak is not credible as a waitress. The characters are all unpleasant or annoying and the story is something kinda icky and very improbable. The biggest liability of the film is Kim Novak’s ugly hairdo. Kim’s head is already large in size compared to the rest of the cast but with that god awful bouffant hairdo she has, her head is beyond ginormous. Just look at the DVD cover. It dwarfs everything that’s at close proximity to it, including Dean Martin’s head which looks positively puny next to her Easter Island statue cranium. Everything appears out of proportion because of it. It’s truly distracting.
Unfunny, overdone and implausible, this is not one of Billy Wilder’s shining moments.
