Kizumonogatari Part 3
Perhaps it’s only fitting that “Kizumonogatari Part 3” is a mixed bag. It feels like the inevitable culmination of its predecessors, representing the “Kizu” trilogy at both its best and worst. The worst part remains the animation, which turns characters flat and makes every background look like the inside of a biscuit tin. The one moment by which I will forever remember these films is when Shinobu holds out a horrifically disfigured severed head, which is created with such embarrassingly bad CGI that it made me say ‘Eww’ out loud. Probably not the kind of horror the animators had in mind.
Unlike the second film, “Part 3” lacks scenarios that make good use of the computer animation. Its one overly long battle is fought between two vampires, who are capable of regeneration and hence practically unkillable. Them tearing off each other’s limbs by the dozen has all the plasticity of a ball of pizza dough being slammed around in a stand mixer, without being half as satisfying to watch.
But the film’s strongest aspect is its character writing, which is what “Monogatari” is all about. Strangely, ‘Part 3’ has little to show us that we did not know already. Rather, it plays its characters off against each other, and gets quite a lot of mileage out of doing so.
The film’s tensest scene is not the vampire fight, but a character moment: Hanekawa getting prepared to let Araragi touch her breasts. Suddenly, the typical “Monogatari” lewdness isn’t a joke anymore. We know from before that Hanekawa is sexually uncertain. She is clearly not comfortable with showing her breasts, let alone having them touched.
As the tension ramps, Araragi gets increasingly lost in his desires, whilst Hanekawa, blushing profusely, steadily comes to admit that she is into it. It is a highly loaded scenario, which works because we have followed these characters for three entire seasons. We know Araragi is both a hero and a pervert, and a tiger is hiding within Hanekawa.
That “Kizumonogatari Part 3” manages to turn a puberal groping session into a veritable paroxysm is “Monogatari” at its most inimitable — absurd and hypersexual, but founded on essentially human emotions. It almost makes one forget that the rest of the film is a slog.
Third and final, a must watch for the backstory of Araragi to be filled in..
For those who’ve not read the Manga the story told in this trilogy fills in many of the gaps and helps explain the unrequited love that is one of the sub-plots in Bakemonogatri. Each of the three is a solid entry in the world and is worth the watch.
