Ten dollars a day and expenses.
Striking camera work letting the viewer see through the eyes of hard-boiled detective Philip Marlowe(Robert Montgomery). This is an intriguing Raymond Chandler tale that has the “private dick” solving a murder while seeking a missing socialite. Montgomery directs himself and is primarily only seen in a scene looking in a mirror. Novelty of the camera work is clever and makes YOU part of the movie. Its pretty cool finding the clues. Very apt cast featuring Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan, Leon Ames and Jane Meadows. Fun to watch.
Overripe noir…
Rather laughable and ridiculous detective story might have rated as an interesting attempt were it not for Steve Fisher’s pallid script, based on Raymond Chandler’s book. Robert Montgomery directed and stars as cynical, hard-bitten gumshoe Phillip Marlowe, hired by a female publisher to locate the missing wife of her boss; naturally he smells a rat. Shot from Marlowe’s point of view (with a few reflection glimpses of Montgomery), the picture certainly has a memorable gimmick–but what else does it have? Actually, David Snell’s superlative score is the movie’s finest asset, the visual trick growing stale after about 45 minutes. Fisher is overly fond of B-movie clichés, and his plot is patchy to say the least. *1/2 from ****
