Reviews:

A Touching Movie About Friendship, Revelations and Farewell
In London, in a pub, the friends Vic Tucker (Tom Courtney), owner of a funerary agency, the former boxer Lenny (David Hemmings) and the gambler Ray Johnson (Bob Hoskins) gathers with Vince Dodds (Ray Winstone), the owner of a `showroom’, to accomplish the last wish of his father and local butcher Jack Dodds (Michael Caine): to throw his ashes in the sea, in Margate. His wife Amy (Helen Mirren) delivered a note to Ray, where Jack expressed his last desire. Along their journey in a Mercedes Benz, the story of their lives is disclosed through flashbacks or thoughts, where deep secrets are revealed to the viewers along 109 minutes of this excellent film. The cast of this movie is outstanding and their performances are fantastic. There are many subplots and in the end, all the characters are very well developed though their personal dramas, recollections and dialogs. A touching movie about friendship, revelations and farewell, and highly recommended for sensitive persons. My vote is nine.

A very moving story about love & friendship.
Veteran director Fred Schepisi (“Iceman”, “Six Degrees of Separation”) adapts and guides this excellent film version of Graham Swifts’ novel. Four South London men gather together for an extended road trip; another member of their tight-knit group has just died, and they’re going to fulfill his dying wish to have his ashes scattered off the pier at Margate. Over the course of the film, we see numerous flashbacks that show how their relationships have evolved over the years.

If you’re anything like this viewer, you sought this out because of the opportunity to see a peerless group of old-school British thespians together. And this ensemble is simply luminous, with Sir Michael Caine having a grand time as one of the more colourful characters, the late Jack. Schepisis’ direction is sensitive and right-on-point; Bob Hoskins (who frequently acted with Caine over the years), Tom Courtenay, and David Hemmings (a hoot as a two-fisted fighting type), are Jacks’ loyal mates. A wonderful Helen Mirren is Jacks’ wife, and Ray Winstone is Jacks’ son. A talented group of then up-and-comers play these characters at younger ages.

The action spans several decades, taking us on a journey through British history, including WWII. Through it all, our protagonists remain vivid, sympathetic, endearing individuals. And the cast gets some truly meaty material with which to work: Amy (Dame Helen) and Jack have a daughter that has been confined to a mental hospital for many years; Jack also had a revelation in store for Vince (Winstone) following the WWII years.

It’s not surprising that the film won an award from the National Board of Review for Best Ensemble Performance. This cast keeps this humourous and touching all the way, through a 111 minute running time that never feels bloated. Every scene serves a purpose, and Schepisi doesn’t indulge in unnecessary flourishes. Everybody obviously simply trusted the material to carry the weight.

Viewers will be interested to know that Hemmings’ lookalike son Nolan plays his character as a young man.

It would be hard to imagine viewers not feeling *something* after seeing this, even if they don’t technically shed any tears.

Eight out of 10.
