I WANT MY MONEY BACK – HEAR THAT? REVOLUTION?
What were they thinking? Here is my beef – plain and simple. When you collect great resources: a talent pool that most Hollywood films strive for: K Bates, H Hunter, R Livingston, B Murphy and especially fresh new talents like J Nicholson, you throw them in front of expensive cameras and lights, you would think you end up with a good film. Halfway decent would do.
Watching the film last night, I have never seen more ‘walkouts’ from the theater. People even left just before the climax began. Thats bad. Rather than writing a personal review of why I disliked it, I welcome the studio to take a cue from the audience, and the box office figures.
Assumably, the people behind the film over at Revolution Studios are experienced in their field. But why would they release Little Black B, in its current state? Fix it first. They know whats wrong with it. Hell, the audience knows whats wrong with it. Why not spend a couple more bucks and end up with a story that truly maximizes the footage they shot and end up with a coherent story? There was even VOICE OVER in it. Fixes should have been more simple.
There are tons of factors in why a movie turns out bad. When its on an independent film, reasons are simple. Economics. They simply had no money. But when oodles of cash are thrown into a production, what excuse does Revolution have to release films like “Americas Sweethearts”, “Hollywood Homocide”, “Anger Management” or “Tears of the Sun”. Same principle applies – great talent, great production value, great concepts, great stories, poo movie. Those were economic and artistic disasters and frankly a waste of everyone’s time. Although those films made a reasonable amount of box office, I mean, come on. I got duped just like everyone else into seeing them. And nobody saw those films a second time.
I don’t fault the filmmaker, the actors, the DP, the weather, the current state of the country, etc. for Hollywood blunders. I fault the studios and the prod companies (or whoever took my money) that let this get passed up the food chain. Or passed down, or whatever. I fault the BRASS – the executives. If their bosses like it, and they know in their hearts they will end up with another Little Black Book or an Anger Management, then risk getting fired for the sake of integrity. Don’t let them release another single movie that people forget about a month later. Thats not why people make films. They make them to tell great stories. And thats not why we see them. We go to the movies to see great stories. To escape. Not to wonder why everyone is leaving the theater. And why I sat there like an ass.
Please, send me my money back….
Are the people voting really watching this movie?
All romantic comedies follow a standard formula: Boy meets girl. Boy gets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy gets girl back. As the audience, we’re supposed to enjoy the How of the formula. And often times that formula is very entertaining. Along comes this refreshing, unpredictable “Little Black Book” that does not follow the familiar formula, yet is a romantic comedy — and a very well made one, I think — the cumulative vote so far is less than 5. Makes no sense to me. Here’s what you get with “Little Black Book.” An intelligent script well directed. Brittany Murphy is impressive in a very seamless performance. Julianne Nicholson practically steals the show. Plus Josie Maran steams the whole thing up. What else do you want? 7 out of 10
