Good Plot, Bad Brolin Acting
I don’t know if James Brolin has just become too old to act or if he’s always been a bad actor and I just never noticed because he is so damn good looking. His acting in this movie brought the movie down. Old age is no excuse – just look at Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, Anthony Hopkins, etc. Brolin “reads” his lines slowly, as if slightly drunk. He moves like he is suffering from either arthritis or severe constipation. The movie itself was very good, surprising for a TV movie. The premise is a rather new one and could actually happen. A catalytic event that threatens civilization is nothing new in movies, but Lost City Raiders makes the premise very believable. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, but not Brolin’s acting.
Not bad, but could have been a lot better!
To me this movie was a not that bad combination of Waterworld and Indiana Jones, but it was like a skeleton of a movie without the flesh that movies usually have or should have. My biggest disappointment was the choice of the actresses (and their characters). That was a huge no-no! One was all like “I’m a never-cast-me-again actress playing a useless woman who just happens to know a bit in machinery”, and the other was like “I’m also a bad actress, but I’m happy I can play a girl with extremely masculine behavior”. The men on the other hand were great in pulling off the poor plot of the movie. They were good enough for me to want to watch them till the end. Especially Ian Somerhalder (aka Jack) managed to make a different character out of what was written. Instead of the originally selfish, foolish, arrogant, careless and material boy who quickly turned into a caring, selfless and trustworthy hero, Ian Somerhalder made an adventurous, reality-facing and easy-going young man who evolves into a responsible, sarcastic and fun man. I knew Ian was not a bad actor, but he turned out to be so good that if not for him I would stop watching the movie right after I saw Bettina Zimmermann as Giovanna. In other words, this could have been a wonderful movie if the writers didn’t do such a lousy job, if the cast (I mean females) was chosen more properly, and if it had more fun quotes. In overall, I would recommend watching it once: there are a couple of good special effects worth watching 🙂
