Plot and pacing unlike Hollywood’s formula
And beautiful and fascinating film with a gentle lyric quality. Runs directly counter to the usual Hollywood expectations. The most emotionally packed scene is filmed in extreme longshot! You can’t even see the faces of the actors but the location and the action that you can see are enough. If you want to see a standard hollywood formula, then stay away. If you like quiet and moving films shot in entirely new ways (granted the director owes much to Ozu) then get this film.
A very beautiful film with scenes that will stay in your memory for a long time
“Maborosi” was my first acquiantance with Hirokazu Koreeda. It tasted like more, and Koreeda went on to become the most important contemporary director of Japan.During his career Koreeda built a varied oeuvre. The las film I saw (“Shoplifters” (2018)) reminded me of Ken Loach but “Maborosi” was in the style of Yasujiro Ozu. There are static camera’s, before and after the scene sometimes the empty space (without actors) remains visible for a few seconds and there is a prominent place for some utensils in the frame (teapot) or in the story (green bycicle).
The story however is not very Ozu like. The story focuses not so much on family business but much more on existential questions facing the individual. The husband of the main character Yumiko (Makiko Esumi) has commited suicide at a young age. After a couple of years Yumiko remarries a widower and moves from the city of Osaka to the country side of the Noto peninsula. Both spouses carry a history with them, and especially Yumiko because her husband killed hilmself out of the blue, without a known motive. The emotions however remain beneath the surface during most of the film.
“Maborosi is a very beautiful film with scenes that will stay in your memory for a long time. The way Koreeda depicts the movement from the city of Osaka to the countryside of Noto is very elegant. Yumiko boards the train at a very big station building and she arrives in a one wagon slow train. The most memorable scene however is without any doubt the scene were after a cremation ceremony Yumiko asks her second husband the question that was in the air all the time: “Why did he do it?”. Her husband of course has no answer, or at least no definitive answer. The question has nevertheless been raised, and that is the important thing.
